(From page 1) organ transplants is a difficult one for most people to face or even talk about, until circumstances force them to deal with it. She would like to see public awareness campaigns through the media informing people of the im- ortance of donating vital organs in the event of death. After all, she says, there have been media campaigns about drinking and driving, the perils of sioking, and how to avoid AIDS, but precious little on the topic of organ transplants. It is for these reasons that she and Dave decided recently to tell the story of their nightmare to the media. And even though Dave's plight has received widespread me- dia converage in the last couple of weeks, the public reaction has been cool. "We've had a few crank calls, a few people calling to tell us about faith healers, but not much support," said Sandi. She has been in touch with her MPP and has written to Onta- rio Health Minister Elinor Caplan outlining some of the changes she feels are necessary to help Dave and others in a similar predica- ment. The Health Minister has not yet replied. Up until a year ago, Dave and Sandi didn't think very much about heart or other organ trans- plants. They both worked at General Motors (Dave has 27 years with the company) and were looking forward to moving into a spacious new home in a suburb in North Whitby. But two days before they were to move, Dave suffered the first of two heart attacks. He was, in his words, "healthy as a horse, never sick a day in my life." The first attack hit him at midnight. He felt no severe pain, just "indigestion," and nausea, and heavy perspiring. Sandi drove him to hospital. A few weeks later, he had a second attack on the front lawn at home. He collapsed, and barely made it to hospital. Doctors were not sure how much damage had been done to Cave's heart, but by last March, his condition really began to dete- riorate. He could no longer take short walks, and further medical tests revealed his heart was badly damaged and getting progressively Worse. At age 43, he was told by physicians at Western Hospital in Toronto that he would need a new heart or his chances of living out UTS ABOUT | CHOCOIAT TRUFFLE -- of the week -- 20° OFF =") Mocha 182 Queen St., Port Perry ~ OPEN 7 DAYS - 10 to 10 this year would be slim at best. He has accepted the fact he needs a new heart, but the waiting is the hard part."I'm scared, but I try not to think about it, or it would drive me crazy." Now officially retired from G.M., Dave spends his days sit- ting by the phone for the call WEDK. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 3, 1968 -- 3 Time critical in wait for a new heart from Western Hospital. And once that call does come, ne's determined to get through the surgery, make a quick recovery and get on with the «est of his life. Sandi is convinced that the system for organ retrieval in Onta- rio is not adequate, and because of this, she is spending a lot of time talking to politicians and the me- dia. "It's a scarey situation. Dave can be cured, but we just can't get the neccessary part," she said. And as they sit and wait, they both know that time is running out. -- With cool lake breezes coming in off the lake, and blue sunny skies overhead, a large crowd of music lovers sat back In their lawn chairs and thoroughly en- joyed the relaxed jazz sounds of a Dixieland Band at the gazebo, Paimer Park, on Sunday afternoon.
