"The main thing is we're not getting enough moisture," Mr. Dowson explains. "There's not enough rain, and there wasn't much run-off in the spring. The sun's so hot it's drying everything out." And with the land bone dry, and the water table so low, a dry well could take as long as three months to fill back to normal levels--and that's if we get lots of rain. Farmers are feeling the effects in more ways than one. "Some farmers are saying crops are good. Others are saying it's been better," Mr. Dowson says. Mr. Johnston says his biggest problem is watering his herd, but he says he'll be lucky to get a sec- ond cut of hay off the dusty fields. So while he's hoping for rain, he's also hoping we don't get a torrential downpour all at once-- that could ruin his grain crop. As for homeowners, Mr. Dow- son says they're shocked when their wells run dry. | "They can't believe it, they just can't believe it," he says. "Most of them say they take water for granted unl it's not there." Mr. Dowson can believe it. He's been putting in some crazy hours these days, and even with four . trucks on the road, he may have to hire another full-time driver if the dry spell continues. He starts work early in the morning and sometimes doesn't get to bed until 3o0r4 am. Although his own water supply (90% of it comes from an artesian well on Highway 12) is in good order, he admits he's beginning to look for another water source--just in case. And even though his own per- sonal well, a dug well, hasn't run dry yet, he's keeping an eye on it. "I'm conserving," he says with a grin. 2 2 2 2 > > 2 Jud PJ J WS 22 2 2 2 > > > 2 2222 >> > > 2 2 2 > 2 > > 2 dd > 2 > > 222 > > > > 2 2 > > 2 2 2 2 0 dene C--O PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 16, 1988 -- 11 Some of the best advice for deal- ing with dry wells is old advice, but it still holds true. If you're worried about your supply of water, conserve it mis- erly. Try to avoid flushing the toi- let as much as possible--some people have been taking water from the lake and putting it in their tanks. Take short showers instead of baths--and if baths are necessary, use the water more than once. Water wells bone dry Do your laundry at the laundro- mat, and give your dishwasher a rest. If you have a cistern in your basement, use that for drinking water--or pick up bottled water at the grocery store. And don't worry about a dirty car, or the grass turning brown. Leave the garden hose hung up in the shed--you'll need your water supply more than your flowers do.
