es eg RE ne, _ ne. 14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 16, 1988 Thief steals Labrador pup while owner is not home Somewhere in the Toronto area, there's a man who just presented his son with a puppy. The seven week old pup is a pu- rebred Labrador Retriever, almost white he's so blonde. Chubby and happy, he'll be the perfect pet for this young boy. The youngster is probably thrilled about the arrival of "Brutus". He probably thinks his Dad is the greatest guy in the world for fiving him a pet. And he'll probably never know his fa- ther is a thief. However, Daryl Ann Neve knows he is a thief. And she knows she won't be so trustwor- thy around strangers ever again. e Scugog Island woman and her husband had their jet black Lab, Nita, bred recently and she presented 'the Neves with u pup- pies. After advertising them for sale in various local papers, only five pups remained--four black and one go den, which Daryl nicknamed rutus 'and decided to keep as a pet. As for the other four, Daryl was determined to find them good homes, so she advertised them in the Toronto Star. On Tuesday, she received a call from a man who was interested in seeing the pups. "He said he wanted something for his son. He used to have a pit bull which he got rid of for some reason," Daryl recalled. The caller wanted to see the pups the next day, and Daryl told im to come at 2 p.m. because she'd be away until then. "I then proceeded to give him exact directions," she said The next day, Wednesday, she was a little late getting home to her appointment, but to her initial relief, the man wasn't there. "Good," she thought, "I haven't missed him." As soon as she got home, she went to the backyard kennel, with its 10 foot fence, to let Nita and her puppies out for a run. Normal- ly, all five puppies would come bounding to the gate for attention, but this time, the golden pup was missin . Dary searched the kennel inside Ar A: a ed JEWELLERY & TANNING INC. 263 Queen St., Port Perry 985-8555 August Special: 10 TANNING SESSIONS REPAIRS -- GIFTWARE -- CUSTOM DESIGNS Light'n Lively YOGOURT B59e¢ Unsweetened 119 Ib. "If the mother (Nita) can get out, she will," Daryl pointed out. Obviously, if the one puppy could have escaped, so would the other four and their mother. But only the golden pup--worth be- tween three and five hundred dol- lars--was gone. "Somebody had to have gone in and taken the dog," she said. And she believes it was the man who called her--the man who nev- er did show up that afternoon. She checked with nearby neigh- bours, but nobody saw a car in her driveway. She called Durham Re- gional Police, veterinarians and municipal offices (where dog tags are distributed), but she doesnt really expect to see the dog again. Brutus was still too young to be tattooed, and other than his almost white blonde fur, has no identifia- ble features. Still, if anyone has any knowl- edge of the incident, they are urged to Scall Crime Stoppers at 436- 8477. Callers won't be asked for their names, and will not have to go to court. Crime Stoppers will pay | up to-$1,000 for information eading to the recovery of the dog, and the arrest of the person re- sponsible for stealing it. Daryl Neve is upset, naturally, about the disappearance of her pet, but the incident has had a far more frightening impact on her life. "Up here, people don't often "lock their doors. You trust people, and it's scarey when something like this happens," she said. Scar- ey, "because someone's gone up to our home and actually taken - something that belongs to us. "It's really offensive and you feel really helpless." Voortman COOKIES 1 39 Ib. 41. FRUTTI DRINK 4 flavours 1.59 - Heinz VINEGAR 2.59 4 |.
