18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 16, 1988 Cheryl will spend year on Rotary exchange in Japan During a trip to Baffin Island, 18 year old Cheryl Martin con- sumed whale blubber, so she fig- ures, "if I can eat blubber, I can eat anything." What she's not worried about eating is sushi--raw fish--and she figures she'll be downing a lot of the stuff in Japan, where she is now, and will remain for nearly a year. She left her Port Perry home, parents and family on Sunday for Osaka, Japan where she will stay until July 1989. Cheryl talked to the Star about her expectations of the trip, last Friday afternoon, when she breezed in looking happy, if not a trifle nervous. "I'm sure I'll be nervous but I'm really excited about it," she said. The trip is part of the Rotary Club International exchange pro- gram, which Cheryl heard about over the announcements at Port Perry High School one day last year. BEEF & CORN ROAST She had applied for the program two years ago, "but I didn't think I was ready to go, and neither did my parents." So she applied again, was inter- viewed, and on November 8, 1987, she was accepted. And boy, was she excited. "I was really shocked," she re- calls with a big smile. "It just hit me, bang! And I started jumping up and down.!" She could have gone almost anywhere in the world, but chose to visit Japan, somewhere she al- ways wanted to go. She likes the idea of being somewhere totally different, culturally and historical- ly. "I'd like to learn the language for sure, but I'd really like to just be there and learn what it's like," she says, adding, "I'd also like to lean judo!" She had been boning up on the Japanese language prior to her de- parture, but she found it extremely difficult. - LABOUR DAY WEEKEND - Sunday, September 4th, 1988 -- presenting -- THE GOOD BROTHERS & SOUTH BOUND (NO GLASS BOTTLES) GATES OPEN at 12 NOON RAIN or SHINE . She's written to the Kobayashi family several times, and has learned much about their lives. Mr. Kobayashi is an extremely wealthy textile manufacturer, and to her surprise, lives in a magnifi- cent Cape Cod style frame house that would fit right in here in Port Perry! Shortly after she joins them, the family is taking her along with them to Singapore for a vacation-- all expenses paid. Not that the trip itself is free. She worked all summer long at Birdseye Pool to come up with the $1,600 air fare, and shc must keep $500 U.S. in her bank ac- count at all time (one of the ex- change rules--the money is an emergency fund). But the Rotary Club does sup- ply her with $130 monthly allow- ance, which will come in handy when she attends a private all-girl high school in Osaka. "I have to wear a uniform and everything," she laughs. She'll be attending Grade 12 classes at the Japancse-speaking school, even though she just grad- uated from Grade 13 at P.P.H.S. When she comes home again, Cheryl will probably be going to Queen's University, in the applied arts and science program. In the meantime, she'll be send- ing the Star a progress report of her adventures in Japan six months from now. Maybe she'll even compare the tastes of blubber and sushi for us!
