4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 16, 1988 Yvonne Christie ready for campaign trail When it comes to local poli- tics, one of the things Yvonne - Christie enjoys most is helping People sort out "the little prob- ems." For the past three years, Mrs. Christie has been helping with the "little problems" her constituents run into in Ward 1 (Reach) But if she is successful in the November 14 municipal election, she'll be working on the "little problems" from all over Scugog Township, not to mention some very "large problems" locally and in Durham Region. Mrs. Christie has announced that she is going after the Scugog seat on Regional council, the seat that will be vacated by Lawrence Malcolm who is retiring from lo- cal politics at the end of this term. A resident of the Port Perry area for the last 30 years (she lives on Highway 7A between Port Per- ry and Manchester) Mrs. Christie is completing her first term on Scugog council as the Ward 1 (Reach) rep. She likes to refer to the four wards in Scugog by their former names, rather than the nu- merical designation. And one reason she has decid- ed to "step up" to the Regional seat is because "I greatly enjoy lo- oi politics at the grass roots lev- el." "Politics," at this level she said in an interview with the Star last week "requires a considerable amount of common sense. I've found it's a good way to get things done." At the Regional level she feels Durham is facing one major problem over the next three years or so, and that is what to do with garbage. ¢ available landfills are rap- idly filling up and Durham is now scrambling to find alternative ways to get rid of the nearly 400,000 tonnes of garbage gener- ated annually. She admits that whatever so- lution to the problem is eventual- ly approved, it will be costly and will not be to the satisfaction of everyone. Incineration along with landfill are being considered, but Mrs. Christie also feels that strong efforts must be made to- wards recycling more of the gar- bage that now is just thrown away. At the local level, she feels that Scugog has outgrown the present municipal building on Perry Street, and the next council must start taking positive steps towards construction of a new building. "We have good staff and good people working for the Township, but they are tripping over each other" (in the present building) she stated. Another project she feels the council must come to grips with soon is the parking situation in downtown Port Perry. Mrs. Chris- tie would like to see the area be- hind the post office levelled and turned into a properly marked and paved parking lot, with the ap- proval of the private land owners in that area. She is very concerned over what she termed the "appalling lack of long range planning" which creates problems ten or twenty years in the future, and to come to grips with this, she feels the Township should be making FIC ov. rele CX o.@7 -- Why not make an evening of it and come for Dinner in our fine Gourmet Dining Room j Veal Par 1 ina: Steak OsKar: Seok Diver, oak a tender bre veal cut- a 6 oz. entrecote of stri medallions of filet ste let tossed in butter, Join charbroiled, topped [| iahty panried with onions, topped with zesty tomato with crab meat pols lazed mushrooms and flamed concassee and glazed pho maaan with brandy, finished in a With ozaar eka and parm- 198 Sauce. dijon mustard cream sauce. $11.50 $14.95 $14.50 ed in a special blend of spices, wrapped in puff Tenderloin of beef marinat- pastry and baked to your specifications $1 7 5 0 Licenced under LLBO - We support the Designated Driver Program. Come on out Regional candidate 'enjoys local politics" more use of professional planning consultants. ) "I don't believe we (council) should be calling in the consul- tants for every little problem," she stated. But careful planning is needed where there could be long range implications. As for the development pres- sures in Port Perry and area, Mrs. Christie said increasing the sew- age treatment capacity would al- low for higher density housing, and "we need to investigate the potential for increasing that (sew- age treatment) capacity." Recreation facilities, such as the much talked about second ice pad and a large banquet hall at the Scugog Arena "deserve a long hard look" by the next council, and she said she wants to see the Town- ship start developing the 60 acres of land the municipality owns be- hind the Arena for recreation facil- ities such as baseball diamonds. However, paying for major projects like a new municipal building or a second pad-banquet hall in the Township is a major problem and she said she would be very skeptical of issuing deben- tures on such projects. As for the need for a full recre- ation director, she said she's not sure the Township is ready for that move at this time, but there may be a need for a person to co- ordinate the use of the major recre- ation facilities such as the two arenas. Stating that she has always had an "abiding interest in the community, all of Scugog, not just Ward 1," Mrs. Christie said that if elected she would spend designated time each week in the municipal office dealing with - Township business and meeting constituents, if there is office space available. A former history teacher at both PPHS and Cartwright H.S. in Blackstock, she is currently a night school supervisor for credit courses at McLaughlin Collegiate in Oshawa. She has been active with nu- merous community organizations including the Museum Board, Central 7, Canoe the Nonquon and Pioneer Days. Although this is her first term as a councillor in Scugog Town- ship, Mrs. Christie served several years as the Scugog trustee on the Durham Board of Education, in- cluding four years as chairman. She is the first candidate to de- clare for the Regional seat in the up-comihg election on November 14, a decision she said was made several months ago.
