These days he'd rather pursue his favourtie hobby--sitting out on the front verandah with his wife May and watching the Highway 7A traffic go by! story for more about this well-known horseman. Ivan celebrates sixty years in horse business See Ivan Cochrane is bow-legged, he says, because of horses. When the 74 year old Cart- wright area farmer was just a wee lad, he contented himself riding the massive backs of draft horses. Whether or not their wide backs truly influenced Ivan's legs isn't a medical certainty--but what is cer- tain, is how those mammoth-sized creatures instilled in young Ivan a lifelong love of horses. This year marks Ivan Cochrane's Diamond Anniversary of this love affair--60 years of hard work and devotion with standardbreds in both showing and racing. : Sixty years ago, 14 year old Ivan, the second youngest in a family of 11 children, showed his first horse at the Sutton Fair. It was 1928, and Ivan learned quick- ly the fickleness of judges. This particular judge, a farmer from Guelph, was taken by a pret- ty litle filly, and wound up plac- ing Ivan's horse third. "He fell in love with her and that was the size of it," Ivan says with a shrug, standing in front of a table laden with hundreds of rib- bons, framed photographs, and an impressive collection of gleaming trophies. Over the years, Ivan has gar- nered many awards for his prowess with horses, as well as a vast se- lection of judge's ribbons. He grew up in Ennfield, on a 120 acre mixed farm, met his fu- ture bride, May, at a dance hall, courted her in horse and buggy, and married her in 1933. This, de- spite May's personal dislike of horses. "I'm afraid of them!" she says with a laugh. None of their four children (in- cluding Scugog Township Ward 3 Councillor Don Cochrane) inherit- ed Ivan's love of horses either, but that didn't stop this robust man (with a laugh, he says "like a bowl full of jelly") from enjoying his favourite hobby. For 24 years, he worked full- time at General Motors, coming home at night to work in the barn. "The boys from GM would all pai ad If you know anything about Horses, 'you probably know Ivan Cochrane, a genial Cartwright area farmer who marked his Diamond Jubiliee in the horse busi- ness this year. His favourite breed is the stan- dardbred because "they go faster. I had hackney horses and hackney ponies, but then I just stuck to standardbreds." And not just any standardbreds either--Ivan was partial to those with plenty of spirit--the wilder the better. "I like one that's mean. They've got to be spirited to be good." Although he is renowned locally for his , ability to train Foes, he doesn't have any set formula for doing the job. "What you do with one horse, you don't do with another," he says. tie recalls one animal. with a real penchant for . To stop this dangerous habit, "I tormented her" and she kicked, and she kicked--until she finally kicked herself right out.
