The Greenbank Gamblers drew first blood in their 0.A.S.A. In- termediate Open Final against Peterborough by dropping them a 4-1 score at the East City Bowl in Peterborough. Wayne Wells was the winning pitcher for the Gamblers with Brian Condon taking the loss. The game was extremely close as Brian Condon had a no-hitter going at the start of the fifth inning. However, in the fifth inning George Redshaw led off with a long triple and Don Beaton drew a base on balls. TRI The Pee Wee boys House League championship game was a see-saw battle un- der the lights at the south diamond August 20 with Standard Electric winning the gold medals 20-18 over Irwin Smith. The Gamblers scored Beaton for their second run as Wayne Wells lined a sharp double to left field. In the sixth inning the Green- bank team scored another pair of runs as Terry Till was safe on a bunt and Trevor Till lined a triple off the centre field fence. Peterborough made a play on Terry Till coming home but in the home plate collision the catcher dropped the ball and Trevor Till kept on coming to score the fourth Gambler run. In the bottom of the sixth inn- ing, Peterborough scored a run with the key blow a triple by Ran- dy Fife. The key to the Greenbank team success in the 0.A.S.A. games to date has been their consistent pit- ching. In the three games against Oshawa and Peterborough to date, Russ Korbak, Mark Goreski and Wayne Wells have all picked up a win. The next game in the best two out of three series with Peter- borough will be played in Green- bank Park on Monday night, (Aug. 22nd.). If a third game is necessary it will be played in Greenbank as the Gamblers won the coin toss. This past weekend saw the Gamblers competing at the C.N.E. Bulova Watch Tourna- ment on Saturday and Sunday. In the first game Greenbank defeated the Agincourt Juniors by a close 1-0 score. Wayne Wells picked up the win as he scattered four hits. In game two the Bracebridge Bugs were the opposition and this game featured an excellent pit- chers duel between Russ Korbak and Bracebridge's Mike Crawford. After seven innings the game was tied 1-1, but the Gamblers broke in open with 3 runs in the eighth to win it 4-1. Russ Korbak threw an excellent game, allowing only 3 hits while striking out 11. Next game is the semi-final at the CNE on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7:00 p.m. Pee Wee boys tourney Gruelling day at the diamonds After having a real slow start this year in Pee Wee Boys' soft- ball action, Standard Electric were able to put it all together to beat Irwin Smith in the champion- ship game of the year end tourna- ment by the score of 20 to 18. For Standard Electric, Cory Bricknell pitched well during this tournament with good relief from Kevin Pearce. Mike Sluggett played heads up ball at first base, including a double play. Greg Rankin, Andrew Pereman and Chad Garvock shared the pit- ching duties for Irwin Smith while Stephen Parish connected for two triples and Andrew Pereman and Nathan Brown hit a double each. IRWIN SMITH 16 LIL GATORS 11 After Irwin Smith tying up this game in the seventh inning, they got five runs in the top of the ninth to win this semi-final game. For Irwin Smith, Travis Guin- don played excellent ball in cen- tre field and Ian McClelland played good ball at first base. James Gouldburn pitched four excellent innings for Lil Gators while Steven Slade connected for a couple of good hits. STANDARD ELECTRIC 16 SEAGRAVE PARK 15 In the other semi-final, Seagrave fought back from the score of 14 to 5 at the end of the fifth to score ten runs in the last inning to lose this game by one run. Steve Desautels pitched ex- cellent ball for Seagrave Park while Mike Williams came in as relief pitcher and connected for a triple at the plate. For Standard Electric, Cory Bricknell struck out six batters while Mike Hepburn went five for "five at the plate scoring two runs. PORT DIVISION At eight o'clock, Standard Elec- tric won their first game of the day by the score of 20 to 3 against Brian's Towing. For Standard Electric, Jason Bagg and Mike Sluggett con- nected for one home run each while Mike Sluggett, Mike Hep- burn and Pete King connected for a triple each and Kevin Pearce and Cory Bricknell a double each. Graham Holt, Mike Reader and James Paterson each connected for a single for Brian's Towing. At eleven o'clock, Lil Gators scored six runs in the sixth inning to break the tie and win this game by the score of 10 to 7 over Stan- dard Electric. For Lil Gators, James Gouldburn pitched four innings striking out nine batters and allowing only four hits. Frazer Puterbough pitched excellent relief while Steven Sade con- nected for a triple and Mike Tripp got a double. Cory Bricknell struck out six batters for Standard Electric, while Kevin Pearce and Chris Bryant connected for one home run each while Cory Bricknell and Mike Hepburn each hit a triple.
