Con- gratulations to Swain Seeds Slug- gers who worked hard all season, ivan (From page 18) adding that he doesn't like to at all if it can be avoided. His favourite horse of all time was Don Dee Lee, a real winner who, once he was tamed, "did what he wanted you to do." Eventually, however, his pas- sion for spirited horses put a stop to his horse business. While breaking someone else's horse in 1979, he hurt his back. "That's why I'm more or less re- tired," he says. Following the accident, two sales were held to get rid of his livestock, and recently, Ivan and May moved from the family farm on Highway 7A (between Port Perry and Blackstock) to a house next door. While Ivan's suffers from his di- abetes, his general health is pretty good, and he says he's looking forward to judging in the upcom- ing fairs. However, this will be his last year in the show ring. "I'm getting old," he said, "and I don't want to promise to judge a show, if my health won't let me do it. I like to keep my word. 1 don't like lying. I've had too many people lie to me." He doesn't elaborate too much about who exactly had done this lying, but he does admit he's made a few enemies in his time (proba- bly when he was involved in poli- tics as Deputy Reeve). Enemies or not, he boasts, "there's not one person in this world who won't speak to me." Actually, he's a pretty popular guy, especially with his 11 grand- children and 13 great- grandchildren. Not to mention the folks he plays cards with at the Senior Cit- izens Club. And although he likes a good game of cards, he's not much of a gambling man--especially at the racetrack. Even though he's got 60 years of horsemanship under his belt, you won't catch Ivan very often placing bets. "That," he says firmly, "is one sure way of losing money." If anyone should know, it's Ivan Cochrane. BLacksTock FAIR Come Join the Fun -- Where all the action happens in one day!
