Developer asks council to temporarily waive parking requirements Scugog Township council has been asked to temporarily wave the municipal parking require- ments for the re-development of a commercial lot on Water Street in Port Perry. Joseph Steinhage, represent- ing the owners of Jim's Restau- rant on Water Street told council Monday afternoon that the owners want to tear down the existing two storey frame building and put up a three storey structure with re- staurant on the ground floor and two floors of offices above. The new building would re- quire 34 parking spaces. Mr. Steinhage said the restau- rant owners hope to be able to ne- Man fined in drug sale A Little Britain man who sold marijuana to an undercover police officer last summer was fined $900 yesterday. Larry Shepherd, 31, pleaded guilty in Ajax provincial court to trafficking in a narcotic. The sale occurred on Port Perry's waterfront on Aug. 7, 1987, court was told. Durham Regional Police said Shepherd sold half an ounce of marijuana for $50 from his boat to one of their undercover officers. Police charged Shepherd at the conclusion of their drug investiga- tion in September. gotiate to purchase adjoining land to the west to provide the required parking, but so far those negotia- tions have been unsuccessful. Township policy calls for a cash contribution of $5,000 per parking space (a total of $170,000) if the actual spaces can- not be provided when commercial buildings are enlarged or re- constructed. Members of council were luke warm to the request, mainly be- cause there is currently a parking problem in the downtown area, and even a cash contribution of $170,000 is not going to provide an additional municipal parking spots "If you can't buy that property to the west (for parking) this pro- ject may be too ambitious. Coun- cil should take a very close look at this," said Ward 2 rep Howard Hall. Similar concerns about the lack of parking spaces were ex- pressed by councillor Don Co- chrane and Yvonne Christie. Mr. Steinhage suggested a two year "grace period" from the parking requirements, which would allow his clients to put up the new building this winter. He said if his clients cannot purchase the additional land, the Township would be paid the $170,000. He said the cost of the pro- posed new building would be in the $750,000 range. Council will make a decision on whether to grant the request in the near future. NOW OPEN convenience store with a plus McKEE MART 92 WATER ST.
