Wardair Holidays Ontario Registration No. 2811058 + Planning important to Ward 2 candidate (From page 3) "You can't react to problems all the time," she said. "You have to set the tone." Mrs. Pearce is also concerned about traffic problems in the area, particularly the lake end of Queen St. (she'd like to abolish U-turns at that intersection), and on High- way 7A. She would really like to see lights installed in front of the plaza. "I'd really like a chance to plead the lights with the Ministry (of Transportation and Communica- tion)," she said. "We've got to do something. I think it's going to require some screaming and yell- ing." Another top traffic priority, she says, is a turning lane at Apple Valley. And she'd like to see something constructive done about the park- ing problem downton. "We have to sit down with the Chamber of Commerce and local businessmen and hash out some kind of a plan for the areas behind the stores, which right now is a haphazard mess," she said. She also believes Water Street, as a main entrance into town, de- serves improvement. "The one thing Water St. does need is cleaning up. Certainly it needs a facelift." Most of all, Mrs. Pearce wants Port Perry to look as good as pos- sible. "Our main industry is tourism-- anything we can do to improve the downtown area is important. Anything to attract tourists is the wave of the future. We are the core of tourism in Durham." As a result, she'd like to see the Sunday shopping issue in the hands of local, instead of regional, government. She has a lot of ideas she'd like to implement if elected, but says she's not really unhappy about anything that's been done so far. "I'm not angry about anything in Port Perry," she said. "I don't want to change the world, but I would like to see if some of these ideas will work in Port Perry. Some new ideas don't hurt."
