26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 13, 1988 The Greenbank Gamblers travelled to London on Friday afternoon to participate in the 0.A.S.A. Intermediate "Open" Fastball Championships and came home Sunday night as the 1988 Ontario Champions. The Greenbankteam has never played better in their history than they did in the London tourna- ment as they combined excellent pitching with errorless defense and timely hitting to win the On- tario Open Crown without suffer- ing a loss. In their opening game on Satur- day, Russ Korbak got the Gamblers off and running as he pitched a one hitter against South Porcupine and struck out 16 bat- ters in the 4-0 Greenbank victory. Terry Till and Don Beaton had two hits each for the Gamblers with Rodd Real, Brian Till and Dennis Ewart adding singles. Mark Goreski started the Satur- day afternoon game on the gambler mound against the Grimsby Peach Kings and ran in- to trouble in the first inning as a single and a home run put Grimsby into an early 2-0 lead. But the Greenbank team came fighting back as Terry Till led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field and scored as Trevor Till ripped a line shot up the middle. Then in the bottom of the second inning Mark Goreski helped his own cause as he belted a two out long home run to tie the score at two each. Mark Goreski, settled down after the first inning and held the Peach Kings off the scoreboard until nine full innings had been played with the score deadlocked at 2-2. International rules are used in 0.A.S.A.. championships and in the tenth inning a runner is started at second base to start each inning and Russ Korbak came on in relief in the tenth and retired the side in order. In the Greenbank half of the tenth inning John foster was started at second base (in line with the international rules) and was sacrificed to third by Russ Korbak. Terry Till was the man of the hour for the Gamblers as he drilled a grounder over second base to score the game winning run. Terry Till, Trevor Till, Brian Till, and Dennis Ewart each had a pair of Greenbank hits to go along with Mark Goreski's home run. On Sunday morning the gamblers met the Acton Athletics with Wayne Wells on the green- bank rubber opposing Acton's ace Mark Curtis. In the top of the first inning Terry Till led off with a line drive single and Trevor Tills' single put men on first and third with George Redshaw driving in the run with a long sacrifice fly ball, to give the Gamblers a 1-0 lead. After that the Acton Hurler shut down the Greenbank bats com- pletely with the exception of a Dennis Ewart hit in the second inning. However, the Gamblers made . the one run lead hold up as Wayne Tournament on this Sunday The championships in both the A and B Divisions of the Oshawa City and District Fastball League will be decided this Sun- day (September 18) in Port Perry. All 12 teams in both divi- sions will take to the North and South diamonds on Sunday in a tournament to decide the champi- onship. The Nonquon Travellers from Port Perry are in the B Division. Port Perry XL Eagles and the Greenbank Gamblers, fresh from the all-Ontario victory are in the A Division. Team match-ups for opening games have not yet been esta- blished, but action in the B Divi- sion will start at 9:00 AM and play in the A side will get under- way at 10:30 AM on September 18. The tournament will be a dou- ble knock-out format. Minor Hockey numbers up As expected, registrations for Port Perry Minor Hockey appear to be up over last year. At the three day registration held last weekend at Scugog Are- na, 383 youngsters were signed for the coming season. Minor Hockey officials expect that late registrations, especially in Midget and Juvenile age groups will push the total over the 420 final figure for last season. Players will be hitting the ice for the first time in less than two weeks (see ad in this edition of the paper for ice times for all age groups) Meanwhile at a directors meet- ing held last Sunday afternoon, coaching positions for two rep teams were confirmed. Dave Barkey will coach the Juvenile rep team. The Atom 2 coaches will be Bryce Jones, Mike Prechitko and Ralph McCullough. There are still two rep team coaching positions still not filled: for the Bantam 2 and the Midget 2 tcams. Anyone interested in tak- ing these teams this season should contact Minor Hockey president Don Steele. Several House League coaches were confirmed by the directors on Sunday. Novice: Jim Park and Richard Parliament; Atom: Brian Beach; Pce Wee: Ron Cosway, Norm Gawley, Bob Bradbury and Roy Hope. Wells allowed the Acton team on- ly two base runners in the game with a single hit and a base on balls. Wells struck out eleven Ac- ton batters with Mark Curtis fan- ning ten Greenbank batters. This game put the Gamblers on the winning side and they rested while Acton played Sarnia to see who would meet Greenbank in the final. Acton edged out Sarnia to earn the right to meet the Gamblers in the All Ontario "Open" Final. In this game Russ Korbak started for Greenbank with Mark Curtis again going to the hill for Acton. Korbak tossed a three hit- ter against the Acton Squad with Gary Halls home run scoring the lone Acton run. However this time around the Greenbank bats came alive and drove Curtis from the game in the second inning, as they scored two runs in the first inning and another in the second. So going in- to the sixth inning Greenbank were hanging onto a 3-1 lead as Roy Spear was pitching well on relief of Curtis. But in the sixth the Gamblers put the game on ice as Greg Rodd, Neil Rodd and Mark Goreski all scored to give the Gamblers a 6-1 lead. The key hits in the inning went to Rodd Real and Mark Goreski's two run double. Korbak retired the side in the seventh inning and Greenbank had their second provincial cham- pionship in the last three years. The Gamblers grabbed the 0.A.S.A. Intermediate "C" title in Gamblers capture Ontario title Port Perry in 1986 and then lost out to Port Perry in the 1987 zone playdowns. This season saw the Greenbank team step up to the "Open" category and to win their zone they had to eliminate Oshawa A.C.L. and then Peterborough. These victories gave the Gamblers the right to go to Lon- don for the Provincial Champion- ships where they met teams from London, Sarnia, East York, Smithville, Grimsby, Acton and South Porcupine, all zone winners across Ontario. To win the Ontario Open Crown on their first try was an excellent result for the Gambler team and their many supporters who made * (Turn to page 30) Haan Li In the Squirt Division, the Port Perry Star team was the winner on Cup Day last 4% i . * oe i" a A aR dibe AOR Saturday and finished second in League play.
