Induction service September 23 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 13, 1988 -- 35 New pastor hasn't caught a muskellunge Pastor David Daniels, the new minister at Port Perry Baptist Church, would be completely at peace in Scugog Township--if only he could catch a respectable muskellunge. "Having arrived here, it's beauti- ful. The people are very nice and very warm, but I have yet to get a muskie out of this lake!" Obviously a fishing buff, the soft-spoken pastor arrived in Port Perry July 2 and started his mini- sterial work July 10. His official induction will be held at the High- way 7A church September 23 at 7:30 p.m. He came to Scugog from Dart- mouth Nova Scotia with his wife Lois and three children, Scott, 12, Rebecca, 11, and Elisabeth, 7. "It's a change," he says about Port Perry, especially after serving the Forest Hills Fellowship Bap- tist Church in Dartmouth for five and a half years. Before that, he spent close to another five years with an independent Baptist Church he started, also in Nova Scotia. Pastor Daniels' roots aren't all in Nova Scotia, however. Born and raised in Vermont, where "I grew up in a very strong Christian home", he knew at an early age that his life would be led serving God. "As a little boy I thought the Lord was going to lead me on a path to the Gospel," he told the Star. ' After graduation from religious studies in Vermont, he ministered at two churches there before he left for England to serve on a church planting mission for the Foreign Mission Board. Although it sounds like Pastor Daniels enjoys travelling, he says he doesn't. "I don't like to travel," he ad- mits. "When I was in Dartmouth, I was happy to stay there my whole life. And now that I'm here, I'm prepared to stay here my whole life. "The Pastor is a servant of the congregation, as well as a servant of God, and he should view that as an indefinite commitment." The Port Perry Baptist Church has been without a full-time mini- ster for the last two years, and it was a year ago that the local search committee approached Pas- tor Daniels. At the time, he wasn't interested in leaving Dart- mouth. Last December, while visiting Toronto, he came out to Port Per- ry and visited the church. Again, he was asked to come here on a permanent basis, and again he said no. Determined, the search commit- tee asked him again in February, "and I began to sense that this was something I should consider." On April 10, he preached on a call in Port Perry, and two months later, he and his family the gospel," he explains, describ- ing himself as a "fundamental ev- angelical. I believe the Bible is the word of the Lord and we're bound to it. My strength in the Ministry is Bible teaching." Although he notices an increas- packed up and headed west. Perhaps he sensed a challenge at the Port Perry Baptist Church-- being without a minister for two years has had its drawbacks, and attendance has dropped. Pastor Daniels' first goal 1s to fill the church to capacity again. Still, he says "The church is amazingly stable and strong con- sidering its tecent history. But I'd like to see the Youth Ministry built up again." He'd also like to see a good number of young people going to Christian colleges, and a much stronger outreach into the commu- nity. "Our primary goal is to preach ing interest from people in the Bible, he isn't necessarily seeing an increased interest in Christ. "If there was more interest in Christ," he notes, "there'd be a real change in the community. Moral corruption would be de- creasing." And while he approves of pro- grams to combat abortion, drugs, AIDS and other issues, he says the only real solution is belief in Christ. "They're all band aid solutions unless a person's heart is changed," he says. When he's not working, Pastor After two years without a full-time minister, Port Perry Baptist Church has taken on Pastor David Dan- iels, a devout Christian who emphasizes the teach- ings of the Bible. He has travelled all the way from Nova Scotia to be in Scugog, and says he's looking forward to being here a long time--and catching him- self a prize muskle! For details, see story.
