The Ontario County Milk Com- mittee, with chairman Robert Smith, nominated George McLaughlin. This presentation is scheduled to be made at the Pro- vincial Outlook Conference later this Fall. Doctor Clare Rennie made the resentation to Mr. Beath, Mr. ewitt, and Mr. Smith. James Walter Beath, a lifelong cattleman who has farmed 200 acres just outside Oshawa, has al- ways believed in the importance of long<term land use planning. For 30 years, he put that belief to work by serving in a variety of county, regional and provincial government posts, retiring as Chairman of Durham Region in 1980. - He is also a founding member of the Ontario Beef Improvement Association (now the Ontario Cattlemen's Association), and served as president in 1967 and 1968, the first of only three peo- ple to serve two-year terms in the organization's 25 year history. Since graduating from the Onta- rio Agricultural College in the 1970's, George Hewitt has been a leader and innovator in the Dur- ham West region. He is a feedlot cow-calf and cash crop farmer whose farm is a model for many in the community. In addition, he serves the area and the agricultural industry in many volunteer capacities. He is chairman of Durham West's Land Stewardship Program, director and chairman of the tractor pull com- petition of the Beaverton Agricul- tural Society and a vice-president of the Ontario County Cattle- men's Association. Mr. Hewitt also received the Outstanding Young Farmer award from the Bowmanville Jaycee's in 1983. His other awards include the Outstanding Junior Farmer of the Year from Ontario County Junior Farmer Association, the Corn Championship at the Beaverton Agricultural Fair and the County Farm Safety Competition winner sponsored by the Farm Safety As- sociation and the Junior Farmer Association. Ted Smith of RR.#4 Sunderland has extended himself well beyond his farmgate to serve the agricul- tural community in Durham Re- gion. His commitment is most clearly seen in his long-term leadership of many local organizations and as- sociations. These include 4-H Canada, Junior Farmers, the Sun- derland Agricultural Society, the Durham Region Plowmen's Asso- ciation, two soil and crop im- provement associations as well as several other agricultural clubs and committees. Locally, he has been credited with helping preserve the Sunder-, land Fair as an executive member of its board and has arbitrated farmer disputes over township by- laws as a member of the Brock . Township Committee of Adjust- ment. Widely known for his co- operation in government crop trials and success in Holstein breeding, Mr. Smith has twice re- ceived Canada's .Outstanding Young Farmer Award.
