| | | | | | The Greenbank Gamblers came up short in their bid for a clean sweep of fastball champion- ships in 1988 as they were edged out in the final game by Oshawa A.C.L. by a score of 2-1. Last Tuesday night in Green- bank Park the A.C L.. Squad cap- tured the league championship in a well played game. Neither team made an error in this contest and Oshawa picked up 6 hits in the game with Greenbank claiming 5 safe hits. The Gamblers could not cash baserunners in scoring position early in the game and this prov- ed to be their downfall. In the first inning Greenbank had Terry Till and Trevor Till on base with nobody out and failed to cash a run. Rodd Real led off the second inning with a long triple but again the Gambler bats did not deliver the go ahead run. Oshawa scored all their runs in the fourth inning when after two were out Rod McLennan and Jim Crummy hit back to back singles and gave A.C.L. a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth inning George Redshaw doubled off the left centerfield fence and Don Beaton drew a base on balls and Rodd Real scored Redshaw with a single to centre. But with run- ners on second and third the Oshawa defense tightened and From the lanes TUESDAY NIGHT MEN'S September 20, 1988 Team Standings: Cactus Jacks 17; Our Gang 14; Hi Rollers 14; Never Won 7; Champs 7; Bowling Thunder! 4. Trevor Till drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning but that was all the attack the Green- bank team could muster and A.C.L. claimed the Oshawa City and District title with the 2-1 victory. Jim Crummy pitched a five hit- ter for Oshawa with Rodd Real picking up a pair of hits for the Gamblers with Terry Till, George Redshaw and Don Beaton adding the other safeties. Mark Goreski allowed sjx Oshawa hits including three to centerfielder Rod McLennan with Jim Trimm, Jim Crummy and Steve Crummy also hitting safely. Goreski struck out ten Oshawa batters during the game and didn't walk a man but his downfall was the fourth inning when Oshawa bunched three of their six hits. However the loss in the final PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 27, 1968 -- 29 Gamblers stopped in bid for clean sweep game should not deter from the outstanding season that the Gamblers put together. They led the Oshawa City and District League right from "Day One" and won the '""Harry Gay Trophy' for being the first place finishers in league play. Then of course they won the All Ontario 0.A.S.A. Intermediate Open Championship without los- ing a single game. Ironically the first victim of the Gamblers march to the 0.A.S.A. Champion- ship was the same Oshawa A.C.L. team who came back to trip the Greenbank club for the City League title. In the 0.A.S.A. playdowns the Gamblers had twice shut down the Oshawa club by scores of 10-0 and 3-0. The next step on the 0.A.S.A. trail saw Greenbank edge out a strong Peterborough club in two tight games and earn the right to go to London for the All Ontario Championship. At London the Gamblers were entered with London, Sarnia, Grimsby, South Porcupine, Ac- ton, Toronto east York and Smithville (St. Catherines) and when the dust had cleared the gamblers had turned back all comers and were crowned the 1988 All Ontario Intermediate Open Champions. The 1988 season will long be remembered by the Greenbank Gamblers players, fans and management. Very seldom does a team enjoy the success that the Gamblers had this year, and while the City League Champion- ship would have capped a perfect season, the loss does not diminish the excellent performance of the Greenbank team throughout 1988. So congratulations to the Oshawa A.C.L. club on their ex- cellent effort in the Oshawa City & District Playdowns and we will be looking forward to exciting fastball action in the 1989 season.
