es eS Re -- -- Katherine Crosier still an avid gardener at 90 years If the old saying "you're only as old as you feel" is true, then 90 year old Catherine Crosier of Uti- ca must feel about fifty. Mrs. Crosier told the Star on Sunday, during an open house for friends and relatives, that she spends a lot of time in the garden in the summer, and for the past few years has re-finished furniture during the winter, Plagued by some arthritis a few years back, Mrs. Crosier's doctor told her she should keep active, so she took up gardening, and accord- ing to one of her relatives "it is not a small garden". In fact, she grows so many veg- etables she keeps her neighbours stocked up and her freezer full all year round from her "hobby." Mrs. Crosier was born October 3, 1898 in Scarborough, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart. She lived there for 21 years attending elementary school at S.S.#2 Scarborough, Markham High School and Toronto Normal School. Following her schooling she be- came.a teacher and began teaching at Pine Grove near Uxbridge in 1917. In 1919 she married John T. Crosier, the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Crosier who lived near Utica, and they lived on the family farm for six years. The couple had three children, Thelma Beare (deceased), Jean Scott of London, Ont., and Donna Robison of Sacremento, "California. moved to London, Ontario for 10 ears before returning to Utica to ive on the farm until 1950. Since then Mrs. Crosier has lived in the village next to the Utica hall. During her life in Utica and area, Mrs. Crosier spent 23 years as a teacher. Twenty of these were in the old Utica Public. School, which no longer exists, and the re- maining three at the Epsom Pub- lic School. In total, this cheerful, young- hearted lady has lived in Utica for 59 years, and during that time has been very involved in the commu- nity. She was a member of the Ep- som-Utica United Church, taught Sunday School, and also held the post of treasurer for 20 years. She was the local news corre- spondent for both the Port Perry Star and the Uxbridge Times- Journal for many years; is a mem- ber of the Port Perry Senior Citi- zens and a Charter member of the Lake Scugog Historical Society. Last Sunday was a very special day for this "very special lady" and uests were present from near and ar, including her daughters Donna from California, and Jean from London, Ont. Mrs. Crosier has eight grand- children and 10 great gradnchil- dren. In addition to congratulations from local friends and relatives, They left the farm in 1926 and: RONALD D. BRIDGEWATER, 3.
