Fiddle contest in Blackstock Saturday Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly Plans are finalized for the se- cond annual Blackstock Fiddle contest to be held this Saturday evening at the Rec. Centre begin- ning at 7:30 p.m. The September General meeting of the U.C.W. was open- ed at 7:30 p.m. on the 28th by the President, Jean Adams, who read "Take time to smell the flowers", taken from the back of last Sun- day's bulletin. The 'Devotional was led by Marion Larmer, assisted by Mavis Brodie. Follow- ing the singing of one verse of "When I needed a neighbour", everyone greeted those around them by touching them in some way. 'Spirit of the Living Lord" was sung, followed by the Scrip- ture reading taken from Matthew 25:34-40. Meditation and prayer were given and the first hymn was then sung in its entirety. Our guest speaker, Ilene (De- Jong) Bergen, was introduced by Thelma Wright. Ilene, her hus- band and family have recently returned from Bangladesh where they spent 312 years as Food Specialists under the auspices of the Mennonite Central Commit- tee. Ilene gave an excellent slide presentation and message detail- ing their attempts to help our "neighbours" there. The U.C.W. members and guests, 5 of whom were men, were most ap- preciative of our guest's remarks. After a brief business meeting, lunch and fellowship were en- joyed while many viewed samples of the crafts etc. from Bangladesh. Word has been received of the passing of a native of this area - Florence McLaughlin Burns who grew up and taught in this area. Florence has lived in Toronto for many years. A few cousins and many friends in this area will mourn her passing. Also last week Rev. V. Zufelt of Omemee passed away last week. Many of area knew Vern well from his association with Camp. Quin-Mo-Lac. His daughter Ver- na Windrem was student minister on the Blackstock-Nestleton charge for six months a couple of years ago. Muriel Snowdon of Medicine Hat, Alberta spent several days with her friend from Queen's days, Joyce and Gerald Kelly and family. Joining them for Sunday evening dinner were June and Bob Petch and Catherine of Aurora. June was a classmate of Muriel and Joyce. On Wednesday evening the ° ladies of the Blackstock Agricultural Society met at the home of Cathy Hill to surprise the retiring Homecraft President Elizabeth Kelly with a bridal shower. The evening was spent in several games and contests, after which Elizabeth was presented with a Card Table and chairs set. Elizabeth thanked everyone and a tasty lunch was enjoyed with a social time. This was a pleasant break away from the usual meeting with a heavy agenda to follow. A speedy recovery is wished for Eileen McLaughlin who broke her shoulder in a fall on Saturday afternoon. Sorry to learn of the injuries to Jason Kyte in a car accident on Saturday night. Even though Jason was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital we are all happy to learn that his injuries are not critical. We hope that his recovery is speedy. Tracey Cochrane is studying dental hygene at Sheridan College in Wyoming, U.S.A. With Tracey so far from home I am sure she would welcome some letters from this area. Congratulations to Craig Hoskin who won the Canadian Welding Gases Ltd. award for outstanding Academic Achieve- ment in Mechanical Techniques Year 1 at Durham College. Keep 'up the good work, Craig. We are proud of you. At the regular card party on Tuesday the winners were Nerta Masters Les Taylor, Ken Flint, Carl Gimblett, Gordie Ireland, Muriel Butson with low Gladys Potts.
