will not have to shut beds Hospital receives $150,000 The Provincial Health Mini- stry has come up with $150,000 in extra funds this year to help off-set a $272,000 deficit at Com- munity Memorial Hospital in Port Perry. Hospital officials were noti- fied of the extra money last week. Administrator David Brown. said the additional money means the hospital will not be forced to trim its costs by shutting beds or laying off staff, a possibility which existed this year. However, he told the Star last week that the hospital will reduce the number of hours for employ- ees in three departments, addin that these reductions "will not af- fect service to the public." And the hospital will not be creating any new positions this year, even if the workload contin- ues to increase as it has for the past several years. The $150,000 is not a "one- shot lump sum" payment to help the hospital with its deficit prob- lems this year. Mr. Brown said the amount will be added into the facility's base budget. Ontario hospitals this year were facing deficits of some $125 Tuesday, October 4, 1988 million. The provincial dg ment allocated $42 million to cover programs that were not be- ing adequately funded. Health Minister Elinor Caplan has stated repeatedly that the pro- vincial government will not be "bailing out" hospitals in deficit positions. The $150,000 will be put to- wards this year's deficit of $272,000. Mr.Brown said that with the reduction in staff hours in some departments, plus revenue generat- ing Moyes 1 the hospital (an in- : e crease in cafeteria prices, for ex- Copy 50° 52 Pages Vol. 122 No. 45 Wheels set in motion for soccer field washrooms Township council has taken the first step towards construction of proper washroom facilities at the Scugog Soccer Fields on Sim- coe Street North. In agreeing to set the wheels in motion, the council also noted that if there are problems getting permission from Durham Region to construct the building, it could - be constructed on land owned by the Township to the south of the fields. "We (the Township) own land that abuts the fields. Why not put the washrooms there," suggested councillor Don Cochrane. In his letter to council, Soccer Club president asked for a 99-year ERE L lease for construction of a new building for washrooms, canteen, change rooms and storage. "The land is actually owned by the provincial government, who - in turn leases it Durham Region, who in turn have given permis- sion for use as soccer fields.
