4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 4, 1988 Marg Wilbur enthusiastic about the NDP's chances Marg Wilbur will be seeking the New Democratic Party nomi- nation for the federal riding of Mrs. Wilbur, 49, a long time resident of Scugog Township, has been active with the NDP for many Eom at the federal and pro- vincial levels. The NDP in Durham riding will likely be holding a nomina- tion meeting later this week. It is not known at this time if there will be other candidates seeking the nomination. Mrs. Wilbur is believed to have the support of most mem- bers of the local riding association in her bid to secure the nomina- tion. She told the Star recently that the Party is enthusiastic about the NDP's chances in Durham riding in the next election. She cited changes in the riding boundaries to include parts of Oshawa and Whitby as one of the reasons for optimism, plus the - fact that NDP leader Ed Broadbent enjoys a lot of popularity both in Durham and across the nation. She said popular opinion polls suggest national support for the ND this year is much higher this year than it was at the start of the last federal election campaign. "I certainly think we will be - in the ball game in (Durham) rid- ing in the next election," she stat- Mrs. Wilbur said that one of D) THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM the priority issues which the NDP will push in the election is the en- vironment, "All the parties like to talk about environmental issues, but now the time has come to do soemthing about them," she said. "We have to start getting rough on people and corporation which harm the environment and this is at all levels of government, federal, municipal and provincial." She cited the $8-10 billion that may be spent of nuclear pow- ered submarines as a terrible waste of money that could be much bet- ter spent on cleaning up the envi- ronmental problems through de- velopment of new technology. Free trade will also be an is- sue for the NDP this election. Mrs. Wilbur pointed out that the NDP is not opposed to trading 'with the United States, but the Party feels strongly the specific Free Trade deal is a bad one for Canada. She said the NDP would fa- vour a sector by sector approach to trade. "We think we can trade with the Americans without giv- ing up everything." Mrs. Wilbur and her husband live in the rural area of Scugog, southwest of Port Perry. They have three teen-age children. She said she made up her mind to seek the nomination after discussing it with her family. "A seven week campaign is a big commitment, it takes all of my time." Mrs. Wilbur has worked on several federal and provincial cam- paigns for the NDP locally, and has been a candidate in provincial campaigns. Durham riding takes in Port Perry, Uxbridge, Newcastle, Oshawa north of Rossland Road and Whitby north of Taunton Road. Ross Stevenson has been nominated for the Tories, Doug Moffatt for the Liberals and Har- old Tausch for the Green Party. If the council agrees to come up with the money, the Region and the Town of Whitby will co- operate on the project. Essentially, it will. involve the construction and equipping of a composting facility and the Dur- ham Re-cycling Centre in North Whitby. Residents of Whitby will be asked to bag leaves this fall so they can be picked and taken for composting, rather than discarded in landfill sites. Part of the cost of project in- volves buying 50,000 clear plastic (biodegradable) garbage for the leaves at 47 cents each. Durham Region, facing a gar- bage crisis, has embarked on long range plans to reduce the amount of material going into landfill sites. Composting such things as fall leaves is one way of reducing the impact on landfill sites.
