Keith Charles has been a resi- dent of Port Perry for the past 15 years, and says quite bluntly he doesn't much like what's n happening to the community over the fa Sw years. 56 year old business con- sultant, who runs his own man- agement company, will be seek- ing election to the Ward 2 (Port Perry) seat on Township council this November. In an interview with the Star last week, Mr. Charles said "I be- lieve many residents of Port Perry believe as I do. They are uneasy about the rate of development in and around our town. I believe there are many who wish to hear someone on council say "no" for a change." He feels the rate of develop- ment in the Township has been too rapid, the character of the community is being eroded, and "now is the time to ensure that that the future of the town of Port Perry is controlled by local citi- zens and not by land developers and speculators." He went so far as to say that the Township council should, if necessary, put a cap on the num- ber of residential building permits that can be issued in a year. "I am not against progress," he stated. We have a very beauti- ful town here, but if we sit back and if we are not heard, Port Perry will become just another bedroom community of Toronto." He believes it is time to slow the development process down, and let the council sit back and take a very hard look at the direc- tion the community is going. ~ ,He also feels that increases in local taxes are not necessary. "When is somebody going to say enough is enough. Let's hold the line on (local) taxes this year," As for the development of rec- BR NAA a) | ¥( A } J. He said he would be opposed to any long term borrowing to pay for recreation facilities. He also said that going after provincial grants should be done cautiously, use "in order to re- ceive these grants, we (Township) must match the amount, dollar for dollar. This, by extension, means 2 increase in your taxes," he stat- Mr. Charles said he is uneasy about subdivision development on septic systems because of the po- tential environmental problems, and he feels that any system to improve the capacity of the sew- age treatment lagoons should be studied carefully weighing the op- tions and the costs against the im- pact. This will be his first venture into the political arena. He said he 7 %, h : i Vid nC ; 1 decided to try for a scat on council because he is critical of some of the decisions made recently by the council. He cited the Conway project on Highway 7A as an example, especially the large commercial (68,000 square feet of indoor mall) as an example. "I don't think the town is ready for that. The parking and traffic problems are going to be horrendous," he said. A resident of Ottawa Street, Mr. Charles operates Major Man- agement Services Inc. He is mar- ried with two grown children. He is the second candidate to enter the race for the Ward 2 seat. Marilyn Pearce announced her in- tentions to seek this seat several weeks ago. The Ward 2 seat is currently held by Howard Hall, who is run- ning for Mayor in the November 14 elections. $7 Keith Charles of Port Perry has jumped into the run- ing for the Ward 2 (Port Perry) seat In the November week, he described himself as a hard liner when it comes to development. (see story for detalls) Marllyn Pearce is to date the only other candidate In the Ward 2 race.
