TRESS JT eae When Bill Graham set out eight years ago to research the hi- tory of his farm near Greenbank, little did he know where the path would eventually lead him. The research just kept grow- ing and growing, and now after eight years it is finished. e final product is a 300 page manuscript soon to be pub- lished in book form on "Greenbank, Country Matters, 19th Century, Ontario." Broadview Press in Peterbo- rough will be printing the book (one of three publishers considered by the author) and Mr. Graham told the Star last week he expects to "launch" the book early in No- vember. As the title suggests, the + book is. a history of the Green- .* bank area: specifically and more generally a detailed look at life and - events, in rural Ontario, roughly :~ covering the 100-year period from 1835 16 1935. And the book centres around four well-known pioneer families in the Greenbank area: the Craggs, the Iansons, the Beares and the Blairs. "Through their stories, I've tried to describe life in Reach Township during that period," the author told the Star. The manuscript runs to over 300 pages with more than 100 il- lustrations. Mr. Graham researched the - book almost completely from old History of Reach book finished documents, journals, records and new : Casual readers will find that history seems to jump right off the page, and serious history buffs will be pleased to know that all the source material has been thor- oughly indexed for future referenc- es. The book was edited by James T. Will of Prince Albert. Over the next few weeks, the Port Perry Star, with the permis- sion of Mr. Graham will be print- ing excerpts from the book. Here is the first about popular pass- times. : "Another popular entertain- ment was watching horses being bred. A crowd always gathered, for these were exciting events, not only because of the highly charged sexual aspect, but because of the extremely nervous and often vio- lent state of the animals. Original- ly, the stallions stood in any con- . venient small field or space within a town or village. In 1861, the County passed a by-law introduced by the recve of Reach, that forbade in public places a wide range of offences against decency, and it in- cluded the servicing of mares. From then on, a stallion's tour was based on hotels where he stood in a stable yard or other en- closed space. Spectators were not excluded, but the passerby was protected from accidently seeing the act, and the audience it attract- -- PSYCHOTHERAPY -- -- DIVORCE MEDIATION -- -- STRESS MANAGEMENT -- MEDICAL ASSOCIATES, 462 PAXTON ST.
