by John '"Wally"Nesbitt When the Rothmans Trans Am Event came to Mosport it was in the midst of a beautiful Indian Sum- mer Weekend and it was a perfect setting for Thunder. Chevy Thunder, that is. The Audi Quattro' s of Walter Roehrl and Hurley Haywood have been the class of the field this year, win ning six of the first eight races, but when the checkered flag fell on the ninth event it was the two Mobil 1 Cor- vettes of Darin Brassfield and Tommy Riggins that headed the pack. Pole position was secured by Mississauga's Ron Fellows in only his third Trans-Am start. Displaying his knowledge of Mosports curves Fellows guided his MacKenzie Financial Mercury XR4T1 to a new quali- fying lap record averaging almost 109 miles per hour. By the midway point of the race it was a close five way battle for top spot with Brassfield leading Roehrl, Fellows, Irv Hoerr in a Cutlass and Haywood. Riggins sat in sixth, four seconds back. On lap 31 Haywood disappeared in a big cloud of dust on corner eight and his day was finished. At the same time the second Audi of Roehrl slipped into the lead which he would hold until the penultimate lap when, with his differential spewing oil, he was forced to drop back to eventually cross the line in fourth. Hoerr also developed some internal problems and slowed leav- ing Brassfield with a comfortable margin in the lead. Two laps from the end of the fifty lap duel Riggins snuck past Fellows to claim the runner-up spot. And the Thunder was just starting. The Co-Feature of the weekend was the only Cana- dian appearance of the Corvette Challenge. This series is the brainchild of Blackstock's John Powell and is pro- duced by the American Branch of Powell Motorsports. At Mosport, thirty of the identically prepared Corvet- tes took to the track and at the end of qualifying less than five seconds separated the fastest and slowest cars, an indication of just how competitive this series is. On the pole was Andy Pilgram of Texas and sitting beside him, only a little surprizingly, was Robin Buck who runs a Powell car in the Players G.M. Series. Peter - Lockhart, last year's Player's Challenge champ and former Powell Stablemate had an unfortunate coming together with the corner five guardrail and sat twenty __ fourth on the grid. The race was scheduled to be a forty five minute sprint but a major second lap incident on the front straight resulted in three cars being eliminated and the pace car being brought out. With the clock continuing to run while the mess was cleaned up the race eventual- ly turned out to be a 16 lap dash with Stu Hayner of California claiming the victory, one half second ahead of Mark Wolocatiuk and Andy Pilgrim. Due to some mechanical ills Robin Buck did lose some ground but finished a respectable thirteenth, one spot ahead of Lockhart. To show how tough this field i is, former Indy 500 winner Johnny Rutherford could do no better than eighteenth. And the Thunder rumbled on with the final race of the Players G.M. Motorsport Series. Ron Fellows, fresh from his third place finish in the Trans-Am race took to the track with a very narrow lead over Richard Spenard. The 1986 champion, but it was Spenard who grabbed the win and the season end laurels. Rob Fellows, Ron's brother was second in this race and clin- ched the rookie of the year award. Other series had their championships decided this weekend as well. Replacing the Thunder with a loud buzz meant the running of the Honda Michelin Series. Marc Dancose won the race but Geoff Chandler's sixth place finish was enough for him to claim his championship. The Acklands Honda driver had a great season with top three finishes in every race but this one. Normand Boyer would win the final race the following week at Mont Tremblant. Claude Bourbonnais easily captured the C.F.R.A. Formula 2000 Crown winning five of the seven races. Watch for the Quebec driver to move onto the A.R.S. Series in the States next year. It has also been reveal- ed that R.J.R. MacDonald Inc. will sponsor the F-2000 Series for the next three years. In other Open-Wheeled Action, Patrick Lacasse of St. Pie, Quebec took the inaugural championship in the Becker's/Canon Challenge for F'1600 cars. Lacasse won ever race he entered in this series. It has been a very exciting and busy summer of rac- ing this year and it will be nice to have some time to ing the OI' Eardrums but we hope to see you again next year when we come to you "From Corner Five."
