Outside on the side- walk, a group of people stood in the cold holding placards and a huge sign proclaiming their opposition to a Metro garbage dump that could wind up on their front doors. Garbage in Bowmanville is not a federal issue in this election, to be sure. Mulroney didn't even stop to look at the concerned citizens, let alone take fiveor ten minutes to at least listen to them. That might have scored him some big fat Brownie points, locally. And the national TV came- ras would have focussed on his listening, talking with a bunch of ordinary Canadians who don't want the garbage from Canada's largest city dumped on them. Can you imagine John Diefenbaker missing a chance like that? Not on your life. He'd have been into the crowd in a flash to at least listen. ~ This is the trouble with the campaign these days. Evolving as it does around the latest poll, it lacks a human dimension, contact with the average person on the streets and his/her concerns. The people who run these cam- paigns have a stop watch in one hand and the poll results in the other. : | The sound bite is part of campaign terminology. Angus Reid might as well be running for office. We are not suggesting, as some have, that popular ~ opinion polls be banned during campaigns. But there is something very unsettling for many Canadians, searching as they are for answers, when the polls get bigger head- lines and more air time than the issues.
