Marathon golf Tuesday, October 18, 1988 found two fellows playing Marathon Golf at Crestwood Golf Club, just north of Port Perry. Gary England and John Thurston of Ajax, decided to raise money for the United Way by tak- ing pledges per golf holes played in one day. They started out at 7:45a.m. on one of the windiest days of the season and played un- til 6:35 p.m. through rain, snow and even some sunshine. After 62 holes of golf they were tied coming into the last hole and Gary sunk a putt to win the day over John, even though it was John's 27th birthday. Their scores for the 3 eighteen holes and the final nine were as follows, Gary 'shot 82, 82, 79, 40 and John shot 84, 80, 82, and 41 totals respectively of 284 & 287. They played a total of 63 holes. John said 19,817 yards tee to green, they lost only one ball each and raised over one thousand dollars for the United Way. Great golfing guys!
