News from PPHS Large crowds turn out for Commencement by Britt Lorish What annual event is capable of gathering huge crowds of parents, grandparents, students and teachers alike to the halls of Port Perry High School? Naturally, the answer is Commencement, held last Friday evening at 8 p.m. A massive turnout of people fill- ed Gym AB to watch the graduates receive their diplomas and the award winners receive their prizes. For most, the highlight of the evening was the Valedictory Ad- dress given by David Burnett to his fellow '88 graduates. Dave, who had also received both a Port Perry High School Teachers' Award and the William Aldred Memorial Scholarship earlier in the evening, was given a standing ovation for his memorable speech, and was presented the Valedictorian Trophy by Students' Council President, Steve London. For some, Friday night was a definite milestone. David Jensen, who graduated with an average of 94 percent, was honoured with four awards; the Governor General's Academic Medal, the Port Perry High School Honour Graduation Scholarship, a Reu- nion-Alumni Scholarship, and the A.B. Cawker Trophy for the highest standing in four Grade Thirteen subjects. Congratula- tions to both Daves and to all of the graduates and award winners. On this week's agenda is Foreign Child Collection. Every morning, teachers and students may donate in homeroom to this great cause which enables us to help support four foreign children, as well as donate to local charities. The children we are presently supporting live in Kenya, El Salvador, Bolivia and Sierra Leone. Please do your best to help out, rebels. Don't forget that there are prizes for the homerooms that collect the most money. Be competitive and show your school spirit. And finally, the announcement that you have all been waiting for -- Report Cards! Yes, those wonderful documents that can determine your fate and decide just how far you get in life, will be distributed this Thursday, November 10th. But cheer up Rebels, Friday is Remembrance Day and that will give your parents something else to think about, other than your grades. More Port Perry High School news next week.
