ot i 4 Scugog next March Garbage cost to skyrocket The cost of getting rid of gar- bage in Scugog Township is go- ing to go up- - - way up, and the crunch will start to hit taxpayers in the pocket as early as next March. That's the date the Durham Region Works department has set to start closing the Scugog land- fill (garbage dump) on Regional Road 8, just west of Port Perry. The Works Department, in a report issued last week, estimates that the cost of " rly closing" the dump in Scugog will be $1,125,000. a Durham Region Police are ap- pealing to anyone who may have witnessed a serious head on acci- dent near Raglan on October 29. The accident took place about 1:30 on the Oshawa Road, 3/10 of a KM north of the hamlet of Ra- glan, Two cars were involved in the head on crash: a 1988 Chev Ce- lebrity (VCD 245) northbound, and a 1983 Camaro (898 EFH) Police request help ST It will take 112,000 cubic me- tre of soil with a minimum 25 per cent clay content to cover the dump site, plus the installation of several monitoring devices to de- tect leachate in the ground water. Although the provincial gov- ernment has a grant program to cover 30 per cent of the costs of properly closing dump sites, Dur- am Region will still have to come up with $787,000 for the Scugog dump closing. A spokesman for the Works department said the covering of the dump site may be done over a southbound. Both cars were completely de- stroyed in the crash. Percy Jenkins of Little Britain was transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital in critical condition, while Matthew McDougall of Oshawa suffered se- rious injury as well. Anybody witnessing this acci- dent is asked to contact Constable Mitch Colling of the Regional - Police at 579-1520 Recycling meeting Nov. 15 The final paragraph of a story on page two in last week's Star re- ferred to a meeting on recycling to be held November 8. Once the Scugog dump is closed, all commercial/industrial trash, plus household garbage picked up at curbside by Brown's Sanitation under contract with the Township, will have to be trucked elsewhere. The Works department spokesman said "elsewhere" could mean the Brock West dump in Pickering or a dump in Brock Township between Beaverton and Cannington. a any event, ie cost of trucking Scugog's ge to ei- ther of these sites fs going to be high, plus the fact that tipping fees next year could increase as - well. "Yes, it is fair to say the cost of getting rid of garbage in Scu- gog is going to go up exponen- one, tially next year," said the spokes- man, The Region plans to set up a transfer station at the Scugog dump site when it closes next ear, but the bins will only be for ousehold trash. Large trucks will not be allowed to dump there, said the spokesman, Durham Region council voted last week to apply to the provin- cial government for the 30 per cent grant of the $1.1 million to close the dump, and also for $80,000 to help set up the four bin transfer station.
