Several week ago, the Rev. Charles Bull of the Port Perry An- glican Church received an infor- mation package from Election Pri- orities, a non-partisan national organization sponsored by 25 groups and agencies, including several churches, CUSO and the Save the Children Fund.. Election Priorities is attempt- ing to inform the general public about the position of candidates in the federal election on global is- sues. Over 300 communities in Canada, including Port Perry surv- eyed the candidates seeking elec- tion federally on November 21. In Port Perry, a committee of interested persons who belong to the Anglican Church was formed to ask the Liberal, New Democrat- ic and Conservative candidates to complete the survey. A lack of time and personnel prevented this committee from interviewing the three other candidates in Durham Riding. : Members of the committee asked the Port Pcrry Star to print the survey answers given by Eon- scrvative Ross Stevenson, New Democrat Marg Wilbur and Liber- al Doug Moffatt to the 13 ques- tions. The 13 questions in slightly abbreviated form are as follows. 1/Will you support a stronger role for the United Nations through es- tablishment of a UN organization to monitor and verify dis- armament agreements and require that all UN agencies report annu- ally to the Secretary-general on their efforts to promote sustaina- ble development 2/ Will you support efforts to solve the Third World debt prob- lcm by better terms of trade for Third World commodities, includ- ing improved access to Canadian markets and the reduction of Third World debt through various meas- . ures, including forgiveness? 3/Will you support a lcader- ship role for Canada in developing and strengthening treaties to pro- tect the global commons? 4/ Will you support re- negotiation or concellation of the Canada-US trade agreement if the public review determines that the environmental, development and concerns are not satisfied? 5/ Will you support an imme- diate national public inquiry on the implications of private owner- ship of genetic resources? 6/ Will you support legisla- tion to make Canada a nuclear free zone? 7/ Will you support a strictly enforced policy prohibiting sale of Canadian military goods to coun- tries of gross violations of human rights, and require public disclo- - sure of all military exports by Canada? 8/ Will you support more di- rect aid to the Southern African Development Co-ordination Con- ference, and greater diplomatic ef- forts to bring about an end to apartheid in South Africa? 9/ Will you advocate that en- vironmental assessments of for- N Take NOW Der SHOPLIFTING hn 1S A CRIME This message sponsored by the Port Perry Star.
