PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 15, 1968 -- 29 Legionaires romp over Lindsay, then lose 3-1 On Friday, November 11th, Port Perry Legionaires were at home to a very weak Lindsay team and came away with an 8-1 victory. Several players were brought up trom the ""B'* team to help out the Legionaires with this game. This resulted in several players with the wrong sweaters on, causing some fans to play "Name that child", with their neighbours. Less than three minutes into the game Port Perry scored, when Adam Johnston put a backhand shot in the top corner, assisted by Corey Bricknell! and Dave Pashley. Five minutes later Jeff Card scored with a hard shot that beat the goalie, on a pass from 'Todd Smart. While playing short handed in the last minute of the first period, Port were able to hold Lindsay off and still manage three shots on the Lindsay net. In the second period Joe Broad- worth did some fine penalty kill- ing, after Port were caught with too many men on the ice. Back at even strength, the Legionaires ap- plied more pressure, scoring three times to Lindsay's one. Port's third goal was a fine effort by Dave Pashley, sweeping around behind the net and stuff- ing the puck home, assisted by Adam Johnston. The fourth goal for Port Perry was scored by Scott Heasman with a shot to the top corner, glove side, assists to Mike Williams and Chad Kearns. Lindsay's only goal for the night was scored next on a screened shot that trickled through the pads of the goalie, who just missed getting his glove on the puck in time. Port Perry struck back straight away, with another goal by Joe Broadworth, assist to Dave Pashley, to end the second period ahead by a score of 5-1. The third period saw Port Perry burst out of the gate, scor- ing after only twenty seconds. Chad Kearns was the scorer, Scott Heasman and Mike Williams assisting. Jason Pine Ridge boys skate to a win 6-1 On Tuesday, Nov. 8, Pine Ridge Atom B's travelled to Orono for a victorious league game. Two minutes and 51 seconds in- to the 1st period Greg Thompson started us off with Ryan Williams assisting. Orono quickly tied it up a minute later. Kent Taylor took the lead soon after on a rebound from Matt Hobbs and Todd Parry. Matt Hobbs got goal No. 6 with an assist by Greg " Thompson. Brandon Hammond made several fine saves in net. Great defensive plays were per- formed by Shawn Lewerentz and Jeff Clarke. Final score 6-1. Nov. 11 - Pine Ridge Vs. Little N.H.L. Major Red Wings. The game was scoreless until 1:12 into the 2nd period when Jeff Clarke scored assisted by Ryan Williams. Goal No. 2 hit the net by Todd Parry assisted by Greg Thompson. With 2:50 left in the 3rd period Greg Thompson drop- ped it in the net assisted by Ryan Williams and Jeff Jamieson. Port's final goal was scored in an open net by Jeff Clarke. This game showed some great defen- sive play by Jeff Jamieson and Brad Morton, and some excellent footwork by Darryl Moase. This was goalie Darryl Holtby's game as he played excellent in net. Our final score was 4-0. Good work boys! VS. LINDSAY This league game certainly held the fans attention as the score zigzagged back and forth. With 4:15 left in the first period. Lindsay scored. Kevin Gray made a spectacular rush on goal while we were shorthanded and scored to tie the game up. Seven minutes into the 2nd period Lind- say scored again to make it 2-1. Their success was short-lived however as Todd Parry tipped one into the net on a pass from Greg Thompson to tie it up again. Three minutes and twenty seconds into the third period Dar- ryl Moase backhanded the puck into the net on a pass from Shawn Lewerentz. Nice work! Lindsay managed to sneak one in on Port with 4:06 left in the third period. Port Perry's goalies deserve a lot of praise. Both Brandon and Dar- ryl made several saves as did the Lindsay goalies. Brad Morton and Matt Mantel both played very well defensively. We're glad to have Brad Shanley back from holidays and hopefully Jason Logan will be back soon. Coutalakis was the next player to tally a goal, with a knuckle ball looper that completely fooled the goalie, assists to Joe Broadworth and Corey Bricknell. The final goal was scored by Jeff Card, with a good second ef- fort to get his own rebound back, on an assist by Mike Sluggett. 3-1 Loss On Sunday, November 13th, Port Perry travelled to Cobourg, but came back losers in a 3-1 match. This was the reverse side of the coin to Friday's match, as Cobourg were a tough hard- hitting team, who refused to let the Legionaires play to their game plan. Cobourg were first to score, twenty seconds into the game, on a deflected shot. This was a fun- ny goal, as the puck seemed to stick to the ice in places. This was the only goal scored in the first period, although Port had several good chances in the last minute. Port Perry scored in the second period while having a two man advantage, but struggled to get their power play into gear. Gavin Cochrane scored on a shot that went in just under the crossbar, combined with a nice passing play y with Corey Bricknell. Just over a minute later Cobourg scored again on a screened shot that got by Jason Kane, and that ended the scoring for the second period. In the third period the Legionaires really came on strong, pressing Cobourg con- stantly, but Cobourg's defence kept breaking apart the Port Perry attack. Cobourg's third and final goal came when Port was pressing and the puck was flipped out. A lone Cobourg player broke for the puck, with only one defence player to beat, and was able to walk in alone and score. A delegation from Port Perry Legion Branch 419 led by president Dave Dur- ham held a solemn wreath laying service November 11 at the Scugog Memorial Library. The wreath was placed at the ilemorial Inside the foyer of the Library. The Memorial contains the Book of Remembrance with the names of local men who died fighting for their country.
