30 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 15, 1988 XL Eagles soak up all th The Port Perry XL Eagles returned from the fun in the sun country of Las Vegas, Nevada with bronze medals as they plac- ed 3rd over all in an international Slow Pitch Tournament. Their final game featured a nine run third inning to break a tie and cruise to an 11-4 win over a Canadian team from Goderich, Ontario. In earlier Round Robin Play, Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens came up short again on Sunday, dropping a 9-1 decision to Barrie. The girls worked hard throughout the game and at times controlled it, but had problems beating Bar- ries goaltender. Our girls outshot Barrie in the first period but the score ended 3-0 in Barrie's favour. Michelle Fitzpatrick was able to find the net in the second period on a fine pass from Amy Parlia- - ment, which had been started by Kim Poppleton from behind our net. Some excellent pitching by Tim Ashbridge kept the opposi- tion off balance throughout the contest as he weaved his magic with his assortment of pitches. Game two pitted the Eagles against a team from Lethbridge, Alberta and a tight snuggle this was, as the final score was 6-3. Tough for Tweens Tanya and Jennifer continued to play well and kept Barrie from scoring more. There was some excellent pass- ing from our girls around the front of Barrie's net and it was good to see that the girls are mov- ing the ring around and looking for chances. It seems that most of the teams we are playing this year are load- ed with second year girls who have an edge with an extra year experience, but our girls are still making them pay attention. Our next game is Sunday against Whitby. -- PARTS -- SALES -- SERVICE -- for all STARTERS -- ALTERNATORS Air Conditioning -- Tune-ups -- Batteries Owned & Operated by _-- TIM BARTLEY ». Larry Pilkey and Carl Fitzgerald provided the long ball and outfielder Ken Irvine made some spectacular defensive plays, blocking line drives with his body, throwing caution to the wind. The infield was air tight as usual with the likes of Jay Williams, Rick Evans, Carl Fit- zgerald, Dave Dickson and Lawrie Williams handling all plays virtually flawless. In the final game of the Round Robin Format, the Eagles were up against the Nevada State champion Las Vegas Renegades and what a game it was. Tension was evident from the beginning as we decided to rest our ace and go with a couple of untested rookies on the mound. Colin Wackett started and Larry Pilkey reliev- ed in the 5-1 loss to the locals. The game featured numerous plays by the outfield which were hard to describe, including a spectacular slide by Ken Irvine which gave him player of the game honours. The outfield in this game was patrolled by capable hands of Rick Blome, Ken Bryant and Paul Graham. (The runner pull- ed a hamstring muscle and had collapsed in a heap half way to first). Between games the players managed to occupy their spare at Vegas culture time in the sunny, dry, 75° heat with occasional dips in the out- door pool and spending their loose change at the slot machines. For the most part it was early to bed and early to rise with the tourna- ment foremost in their minds. Another year would hope to see less practise time and not such a serious approach taken for the games, and more time spent on seeing the town for its cultural at- tractions, like the opera, ballet, symphony, and art galleries. Junior girls The Sportsland team played their first game against Oshawa on Oct. 29. This was an exhibition game for our girls, the score was 9-8. Scorers were Lisa 4, Denna 1, Cheryl 3. Our third game was on Nov. 12 against Lindsay. This team is one of the better teams in our division. The two periods were fast played and chippy on both sides. Port held their ground and ended up winning 9-6. Scorers were Lisa 4, Denna 3, Cheryl 1, Danielle 1. Our fourth game on Nov. 13 against Woodville was a goalies game. The first period was fast skating and end to end action. The second period with both teams having many chances scoring, the goalies showed their skills once again. The game could have gone either way, but Port held their lead of 4-3 and came out winners again. Strong effort On Saturday, November 12th, the Novice Home Hardware Team played a League game against an excellent team from Whitby. Our home team gave their best effort, but were out- classed by the skating and pass- ing skills of the experienced Whit- by club. The team was glad to see Man- dy Smart return after two weeks of illness, and Mandy was able to contribute well with some ex- cellent passing, shots on net, and an assist on one of the goals. Katie Senyk again played a strong game in net, and was assisted by the persistant check- ing of Pam Hiltz, Bonni-Jo Nor- ton, Brooke Shanley, and Janna Senyk. These four girls buzzed around the opposition, lifting their sticks and stealing the ring on many occasions. The enthusiastic home crowd enjoyed seeing the Port girls go into the corner with the larger Whitby players, and often come out of the skirmish carrying the ring. However, the four goals put in by Cara vander Slaght, Cindy Verschuuren, and Dana Hooker (assisted by Mandy Smart, Alechia Cracknell, and Laura Hooker) were not enough to win the game. While Jennifer Elliot and Michelle Branton were not direct- ly involved in the scoring, they were definitely a part of the pass- ing game which the team is vegin- ning to develop.
