32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 15, 1968 Early Saturday morning the "green machine" travelled to En- nismore for their annual tourna- ment and what a great day it was for the boys. At the end of the day, their coach, Dave Bourgeois, ask- ed them 'were they awesome or were they radical today" and their resounding reply was "both'"'! And they weren't kid- ding, they were unbeatable! Their 1st match-up of the tournament was against St. James of Peterborough. Sandy Mark opened up the scor- ing in the 1st period assisted by fellow linesman Craig Laird and Tommy Chambers. Jeremy Geer closed off the period as he blasted in Port's 2nd of the game assisted by Kenton LeFort and Ian McCready. As the second period opened up Sandy once again found the empty corner and beat St. Jame's goaltender assisted by Craig Laird and Ian McCready. Port scored 2 more goals before the end of the period. The 1st was a rocket shot by defenceman Jay King as he teamed up with Sandy in front of the net and a very hard working Kirk Swain banged in Port's 5th of the game with Jay K. picking up the assist. Nice work boys! St. James got their lone marker in the early part of the 3rd period but the rest of the game was Port's. Jay Tredway got a beautiful goal when he used his hard wrist shot and beat the goaltender clean after picking up the puck from his 2 defencemen Jay K. and Ian McCready. It was Jay 2 only minutes later that boosted the score again this time. Picking up assists were matt Mor- ris and Kenton LeFort. Finishing the scoring spree for Port was Tommy Chambers as he and San- dy Mark worked together to end the game 8-1. For his hard work throughout the game, 2 goals and 2 assists, Sandy Mark was award- ed the M.V.P. Congratulations Sandy! This win put Port on the "A Championship' side and their next match-up was against a team from Godfrey. This was a really exciting match-up as the Green Machine came out flying! With one minute remaining in the 1st period Billy Zaparanuik put Port on the board assisted by Kirk Swain. Throughout the tourna- ment Billy played outstanding not only behind the blueline in his defensive position but he also displayed some dazzling hockey skills racing up the ice challeng- ing the opposition with a real heads-up style of hockey! Super work Bill! Reassuring the lead was Tom- my Chambers, as he found the empty corner and blasted the puck between the pipes, assisted by the fast skating Craig Laird. With only 35 seconds left in the 2nd period Timmy Fitzpatrick put, the icing on the cake with his determined fast skating brand of hockey assisted by defenceman Jay King. With Port winning 3-0 the 3rd period remained scoreless but both teams continued to test each other's goaltenders. Ian Shrigley and Scot Pretchitko shared goal tending respon- sibilities throughout the tourna- ment and both boys were fabulous robbing the Godfrey team on their every effort by making many amazing glove and blocker stops! Great work boys! For Ian and Scot's outstanding performance they each received an M.V.P. award. Congratulations boys! That win put Port up against their final opponents of the day, Miss Diana from Peterborough. in the past Port's match-ups with this team have always been very aggressive fast skating and hard hitting and this game proved to be no different. Port got on -the scoreboard with 1 minute remain- ing in the 1st period as Tommy Chambers rifled a shot home, past a very large goalie, assisted by Sandy Mark. Midway through the 2nd period goalie Ian Shrigley lost his goalie stick after an overly aggressive scramble in front of the net, know- ing a penalty would be handed out if a player hands a goalie their Chicken store. for only $1.39.' It was a great moment to remember! Way to go Ian! As the 2nd period was coming to a close Jay Tredway took a very hard hit into the boards but bounced back to score Port's 2nd of the game assisted by Jeremy Geer and Billy Zapparanuik. Peterborough came back in the 3rd period closing the gap to 1 but Port's Kirk Swain put in the reassurance goal with 3 minutes remaining assisted by Wingman Darryl Bourgeois. Great coaching! Con- gratulations also to Jay King who picked up the M.V.P. for his fine defensive work. The boys each received beautiful trophies for their effort and it was whole heartedly deserved by each and every player and coach because they were all M.V.P.'s.
