Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly On Saturday a large number of relatives and friends attended the Open House in honour of Frank and Betsy Staniland on the occa- sion of their fiftieth wedding an- niversary. This special event was held at the St. John's Anglican Parish Hall. Congratulations and best wishes to Frank and Betsy. Several celebrations were held for Christina Bryans' first birth- day. Supper at Hanc's in Bowmanville was enjoyed with Patti and Rick Alpe and greatgrandparents Babe and Wilf Brown, Oshawa. Many little friends were guests on Saturday afternoon and Sunday supper guests were grandparents and the rest of the family. Rolly and Millie Coy of Egypt recently celebrated 25 years of marriage. Pleased that Mrs. Lillian Wilson is progressing very well following recent eye surgery. Another Blackstoek resident Mrs. Ella Venning also has made ex- cellent progress following her eye surgery. It must be said that cataract operations are one of medical miracles of today. Sorry that Mark Graham is a patient in Oshawa Hospital following an eye injury at a broomball game on Sunday. Best wishes are extended for a speedy recovery. Supper was enjoyed for Rick Alpe's birthday at Nancy and Bob Bryans. At the Town Hall followed: by the ceremonial part at the Centotaph. Mayor Jerry Taylor conducted the service assisted by Area Councillor Harvey Graham. Rev. Dale Davis gave a fitting address. Members of the Port Perry Legion 419 were in attendance and assisted in the service. Another impressive ceremony was held at the Cartwright Public School where vice-principal Mr. A. Sawtell conducted the service. The band directed by Mr. Beirness played a prelude follow- ed by the reading of three Remembrance Day poems by Chris Beacock, Julie Dyson and Michelle Cummings. After the band played Kumba Ya, Rev. C. Bull spoke to the students. Mr. Sawtell showed some slides giv- ing a realistic picture of War followed by the Minutes Silence. The program concluded with O'Canada and the band playing Edinburgh Castle. Morning Unit of the U.C.W. met at the home of Eleanor Werry on November 9. Business included plans for the Tractor Pull Dinner which will be held on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Rec Centre, the Men's Dinner in C.E. Room, Blackstock U.C. Nov. 25, 7 p.m., General U.C.W. meeting, C.E. Room, Nov. 30, 8 p.m. Kathleen Dorrell of- fered to be in charge of the Christmas List for Shut-Ins. The Christmas meeting will be at Alma Duff's home with a pot luck luncheon beginning at: 10:30. Connie Swain was in charge of Worship using Remembrance Day thoughts. Scripture was Psalm 46 followed by notations about the Third World and My Brother. Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day lacks reality for the younger generations. PORT PERRY 285-8448 -- by Norma VanCamp The Blackstock and District Lioness held their November meeting at the home of Lioness Evelyn Trapp. District Lioness President Lynn Nowitski attend- ed this meeting and inducted two new members into our Club in an impressive ceremony. The District project for this year is support of the Children's Wish Foundation to which we made a $250.00 donation. Since this is Diabetes month and Lioness supports work in this field, we felt a $200 donation was in order. Our annual Christmas gifts to Operation Scugog ($200.) and PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 15, 1988 -- 51 Fond farewell 1988 Cartwright graduates Denise House, formerly Auberge ($100.) were also agreed upon. In addition we will collect a box of personal toiletries for the women and children in this home. A social time followed the meeting with a delicious lunch be- ing served. Y.M.C.A. Floor Hockey In Intermediate Section the Red team defeated the Yellow 10-5 with scoring done by Jessie Mac- Donald, Carle Davis, Luke Car- naghan, Goenn Williams, Ronald Kelly and Doug Lynde for the Red team and Dillon Webber, Deryk Campbell and Matthew Bradburn for the losers. In the Senior the Cartwright The Cartwright High School graduating class from 1987-88 got together for a Canadians outscored the Blackstock Bruins 10-9. Scoring the winners were Brent Donnelly, John Ford, Mark Simmons, Jason Cliff and Tony Waldriff while the Bruins' scorers were Mike Hep- burn, Todd Moore, Brad Vokins and Scott Barr.
