MNR seeks public comment on Scugog Island land use At one time several years ago, the 423 acre tract was (0 become a provincial park. Those plans have been aban- doned by the MNR, and Mr. Pa- terson said that overnight camping is not part of the future manage- ment plan. Mr. Paterson said interested members of the public or organi- zations will have until January 6 to submit comments and sugges- tions on uses of the land. SINCE 1976 * PONTIAC - BUICK - ce] V[olag|W]le] ¢- Joint RIDE effort For the first time in the history of the R.I.D.E. program, the On- tario Provincial Police, Metro Toronto Police, Durham, Peel, and York Regional Police are joining forces to Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere through the efforts of the Co-ordinated Traf- fic Management Group. Through that co-operation, more drivers will be stopped this holiday season than ever before. The R.I.D.E. program is a year-round campaign to reduce drinking and driving supported by police forces in the Greater Toronto area which is strengthen- ed each year during the festive season. This year, the program is set to run in each region from Nov. 27 through Jan. 7. The goal of the joint effort is to reduce the number of accidents and deaths caused by impaired drivers and to heighten awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving. Alcohol is still one of the most significant factors in fatal motor vehicle accidents. In fact, research compiled by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario in 1987 indicates that the actual number of alcohol involv- ed drivers in accidents increased by 5.7 percent. However, as a share of the overall accident pic- ture, alcohol involvement has declined. Alcohol involvement was reported in 40.6 percent of the drivers killed in 1987 (down from 46 percent in 1986, 47.1 percent in 1985 and 51 percent in 1984), and in 25.5 percent of the drivers in- volved in fatal accidents. Public attitudes regarding drinking and driving have changed over the past few years, and continued public co-operation and police en- forcement have proven to be an effective means of reducing the problem of the drinking driver. Throughout the campaign, combined weekly statistics from the five forces concerning the number of vehicles checked, the number of charges and the number of 12-hour suspensions given will be gathered and made available to the media on Tuesday afternoons.
