Audience mesmerized by Symphony Orchestra In the stilled sanctuary of Port Perry's United Church the dashing strains of Bizet's famed Carmen themes, as interpreted by virtuoso violinist Ernst Minevich, mesmerized an en- thusiastic audience on Saturday, November 19. For their first-ever visit to the town, sponsored here jointly by Town Hall 1873 and the United Church Choir, the renowned Kit- chener/Waterloo Symphony Or- chestra, one of Canada's ten best, ° under the famed conductor Raffi Armenian, was a glorious suc- cess. "Stunning," "splendid," "wonderful," and "marvelous" were some of the superlatives heard following the performance. In their second-to-last appearance before the close of their Ontario "88 Concert Tour, the Symphony, brass, tympani and all, had cer- tainly been in "fine fiddle." And with their concert-master violinist to spur them on, how could they be anything else but? Opening the programme with Mozart's well-known Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Serenade, K 425 in G Major), the orchestra's ensem- ble romanced the audience with all three movements (the second appropriately titled Romanze), closing with a cheery rondo -- a graceful, classical crowd-pleaser which set the evening and con- NOW OPEN BOB HOWARD AUTO BODY 585 KING STREET - PRINCE ALBERT, ONT. Violin singing, he counter-pointed the full sym- phony with his own orchestration of Bizet's perennial favorite. All the vibrancy and drama of Spain's famed bullrings and toreadors were recreated brilliantly by experienced Minevich on his Calcanius instru- ment, made in Genoa in 1745. Playing fully on all the emotions of Bizet's earthy masterpiece, Minevich's solo passages were soaring and sensational. A decid- ed show-stopper. After a brief intermission, the entire orchestra reassembled to perform Beethoven's No. 4 Sym- phony, Opus 60 in B flat Major, the most joyful of his creations. Fully conversant with the work, and with Armenian's skillful, energetic direction, the orchestra justified its considerable reputa- tion as it executed the various movements: a dark, Adagio in- troduction, the Allegro first move- ment with a playful theme, an Adagio movement in rondo form with the main theme and the third . movement, Minuet in name only, but vigorous, even rough, a true Beethoven Scherzo. The horn sec- tion concluded with an unex- pected musical question -- left unanswered. The finale, in sonata form, featured a pattern in violins, a lyrical second theme by oboe and flute, a long crescendo and a comic bassoon cadenza restatement of theme, all closing with an extensive coda. The concert-goers were en- thusiastic in their applause and would have appreciated an en- core, had it been offered. The evening had concluded on a high note indeed. The gala pre-Christmas perfor- mance was a decided success and a coup for Town Hall 1872 and the United Church Choir. More prestigious events of a similar nature are to be anticipated as such highly respected performers and performances continue to broaden the audience base in town. The kind support of such sponsors as J.M. Schneider Inc., Ontario Arts Council, and others, continues to allow Ontario's smaller communities such as Port Perry to share the talents of Ontario's many skilled performers. The Hall's upcoming series show is John Arpin, well known pianist/composer on Saturday, December 3 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at Irwin Smith Music.
