_---- 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 29, 1988 my Ww dy 0 Lawrence McLaughlin and his wife Linda have won the Brewers Assocation of Canada Challenge Trophy for barley (open class) at the Royal Winter Fair. This was the first showing for the McLaughlins at the Roy- al, though they have entered competitions at Black- stock and Port Perry Fairs. Howard Collins (at right) director of communications for the Brewers Associa- tions, presented the award at the Royal, which In- cluded a sliver tray and $500 cash. Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin operate a 475 acre farm near Nestleton, specializing hogs, beef, corn, wheat and barley. The barley seeds which won the competition at the Royal The Fall Meeting of the Superannuated and Retired Women Teachers was held in the Sunderland United Church on Nov. 9th - 61 in attendance. Christmas table decorations were made by Mrs. Eileen Slute and Mrs. Mae Stark. Following the singing of Grace and The Queen we sat down to a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by the U.C.W. The President, Mrs. Grace Hastings, introduced the Ex- ecutive and Guests. Mrs. Aileen Shier brought greetings from -S.T.O. She urged all to attend the Annual Meeting to be held on May 25, 1989 in the Uxbridge Arena. Provincial Sec. Treas of S.W.T.A.O., Mrs. Dorothy Mon- tgomery, brought greetings from the Executive and Board of Direc- tors. All business will now go through Central Office. The 1989 Annual Meeting will be held in Huntsville. The Ontario Associa- tion of Superannuated Women Teachers History Book is now ready. It covers the years from its inception in 1956 to 1986. Miss Cora Bailey, Hon. Pres., told of her visit to Curve Lake -- of the beautiful quilts on display and especially of one portraying the culture of the area. She pur- chased a book by Alice Williams who designed that quilt. The O.A.S.W.T. pension reform is now in place. All who have not yet received the extra bonus (1976-1982) should apply. 1 61 attend fall meeting o Retired Women Teachers years, kept samples of the pro- grammes of our meetings and of place cards, etc. They are nicely arranged in a photo album. It makes a very attractive display. The meeting unanimously agreed that we should carry on the pro- ject. During the past year we have been saddened by the loss of three of our members. Mrs. Gwenneth Thompson conducted a short memorial service remembering Mrs. Marguerite Canning who taught in Toronto, Woodville and Manilla, Mrs. Ida Dean from U.S.A. who served first in India, then taught in Toronto and Beaverton and Mrs. Kathleen Leask, teacher in Rainy River and Blackstock. Our Goodwill Conveners, Mrs. Aileen Shier and Mrs. Marjorie Mc. Combe have tried to keep in touch with the sick, the bereaved and the aged with birthday and sympathy cards, by visitation and by phone. We are reminded that our organization exists, not to be served but to serve. We should endeavour to enhance the quality of life by providing where possi- ble interesting activities, by per- sonal visits, by letter and by phone. Entertainment was provided by Mrs. Mignon Mayneord and what a delight it was!! Mrs. Mayneord is a Whistler. Whistlers are train- ed just as are vocalists. They must learn scales, exercises and arpeggios. Her programme was f the techniques. A Whistler must learn trills, chirps and bird figures. A bird figure is various little notes contained in a bird call. This is accomplished with the tongue, (it must be flexible) the teeth, the throat, and the pucker. She demonstrated - most interesting. The second part, Mrs. Mayneord whistled several classical selections along with a musical background ending with George Beverley Shea's "I'd Rather Have Jesus' - a most delightful presentation! Thank you Mrs. Mayneord. During the programme Mrs. Marion Johnson and Mrs. Grace Hastings led in a Christmas sing- song - Christmas Chopsticks, a Christmas Acrostic, I Saw Three Ships A-Sailing and I'll Be Home for Christmas. The meeting clos- ed with the singing of O'Canada. Obituary Charlotte (Forder) Byers were hand-selected by Mr. McLaughlin. Mrs. Olive Jewell has, over the Born and educated in Monteagle Township, Charlotte (Forder) Byers, died in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, Wednes- day, October 26, 1988, in her 86th year. Daughter of John and Kitty (Sutherland) Rutledge, she was married in 1924 to the late Joseph H. Forder, Blackstock, and in 1963 a to the late Rupert Byers, Bowmanville. A devoted homemaker, she was a member of Trinity United Church, Beehive Rebekah Lodge and the U.C.W. Surviving are her sons Harold, Don, daughters Lucille (Mrs. Gor- don Sturrock), Marilyn ( Mrs. Gary Hancock), and Donna (Mrs. Don Wright), 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husbands and a son Howard. Funeral services were held on Friday at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, Bowmanville, with the Reverend E. Schamerhorn officiating.
