- Pa 7 Bh SATAN nT I | ba 28 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday. November 29, 1988 Dukes hand MoJack The Port Perry MoJacks came away with two points in two games last week, winning 6-4 over Ajax Axemen and losing a tough 4-3 decision to Wellington Dukes at the Scugog Arena. In the loss to the first place Dukes Saturday night, the Mo- Jacks received a great performance from netminder Jeff Lynch who faced 37 shots, and at times was tacular in keeping the team in e game right to the final buzzer. The MoJacks could manage just 21 shots against the tough- checking first place Wellington Lynch was a very busy man all evening, facing 12 shots in each of the first two period and 13 in the final frame. He was espe- cially sharp in the second period when the MoJacks found them- selves two men short for a full two minutes. He could not be faulted on the first Wellington goal as he was at the Port Perry bench on a delayed penalty call. The puck seemed to deflect off a Wellington player's stick and slithered into the vacant net. : Early in the second, the Mo- Jacks knotted the game at 1-1 as Steve Fountain converted a center- ing pass from Troy Foster and Jeff Fitchett. Late in that period, the Mo- Jacks took a 2-1 lead when John Harman tucked in a back-hand from the slot with assists to War- ren Geer and Brad Menzies. The MoJacks were nursing that slender lead into the final ten minutes when the Dukes struck for three goals to open a 4-2 lead. Jeff Fitchett scored in the final minute for the MoJacks on a set up from Harman and Chris Pearce. This was certainly an enter- taining hockey game, high-lighted by the fine play of Lynch in the MolJack cage. Even though the MoJacks were out-shot, they were not out-played, and with a little luck around the Wellington net, they might have pulled out a vic- tory. On Tuesday November 22, the MoJacks turned in a strong perfor- mance to trip up the Ajax Axe- men 6-4 in a penalty-filled game played in Ajax. After trailing 2-0 in the first period and 4-2 after 40 minutes, the MoJacks surged ahead in the final frame with four un-answered goals, including an empty netter with four seconds left on the time clock. Warren Geer paced the team with a pair of goals with singles to Chris Edmonston, John Har- man, captain Thane Ellis and Ste- ven Fountain, who also helped sct up three other MoJack markers. Harman had a pair of assists as did Greg Warriner, It was Ellis who broke a 4-4 tie late in the third period with as- sists to Brad Menzies and Harman; and Fountain clinched -the win into an empty Ajax net on a nice pass from Jeff Fitchett. The busiest guy in the build- ing was the time-keeper as the MoJacks were called for 24 mi- nors, plus fighting major to Paul Barry. The Axemen took 22 mi- nors with one fighting major to Steve Smith. With all the minor penalties, there was just one power play goal in the game by Ajax in the first Pood. ter a very busy schedule the past couple of weeks, the Mo- Jacks have the luxury of several days off. Their next game will be this coming Saturday night (Dec. 3) at the Scugog Arena against Co- bourg. Faceoff is 8:00 PM. And the team will be looking for a little revenge as the Cougers have won both meetings to date on their home ice. NOTEPAD: The MolJacks arc gct- ting some good work from the penalty killers. The tcam has giv- en up just one power play goal in the last two games, and shut down Wellington completely on Satur- day night. But the team is also having trouble scoring with the man advantage. The MoJacks managed one power play marker Saturday night, but missed a great chance to take a lead when the Dukes were two for an ex- tended period of time. The MoJacks appear to be playing with a lot more intensity and desire in the last couple of games. Steve Fountain is beginning to emerge as one of the on-ice leaders. He had four points against Ajax and a goal against the Dukes. And while he continues to play a very rugged brand of hock- ey along the blue line, he's stay- ing away from the penalty box. The MoJacks were scheduled to play in Lindsay last Friday evening, but the game was can- celled because the new Lindsay Arena is not quite completed. Katie faces 50 The Novice Home Hardware Ringettes had a tough game on Sunday afternoon when they fac- ed their strongest opposition yet from Scarborough. This team ar- rived with only ten girls who played their positions well, were very accurate in their passing, and took every opportunity to shoot on net. They scored nine goals to our one. The Port Perry star would have to be Katie Senyk as she faced 50 shots and certainly kept the score from being in the double digits. Cara Vander Slagt, assisted by Dana Hooker, was able to find the net with an unusual rolling shot to get the Port team on the scoreboard. In spite of the loss, Walter Senyk, Dianne Hooker, and Todd Poppleton, the coaches, are see- ing a gradual but definite im- provement in many areas of the - game, and enthusiasm is running high on this team of seven, eight and nine year old girls. Our Home Tournament will be held this weekend, December 3rd, with our first game being played at 9 a.m. against a team from Whitby. We welcome all in- terested spectators to come and cheer us on! Port Perry MoJack netminder Jeff Lynch was up, down and all around the cage Saturday night as he faced 37 tough shots from the visiting Wellington Dukes. Despite the fine game from Lynch, the MoJacks lost to the first place Dukes by a 4-3 score. However, there are Indications that the team Is starting to play some decent hockey after a bit of a rocky start. (see story for details) Midget Eagles jump to a good start this season Well, the Grant Menzies Motors Midget Eagles are off and runn- ing for another season. In exhibi- tion play they sport a 5-0-1 record with wins against Lindsay, Ajax, two vs. Peterborough and one against Oakwood. The tie was also against Lindsay. In league play their record is 2-1-2. Wins against Cobourg and Lindsay. The loss was against Bowmanville. Travelling to Cobourg on Tues- day, Nov. 15 the Eagles came up with a 4-3 victory. Still without coach Doug Scott because of a suspension, the Eagles had asst. coach Craig "Chatterbox" Taylor and Dave Dickson on the bench. Dave never made it through the game as he was ejected for a slight disagreement with the Ref. Behind 3-0 in the third period Port began their assault as Todd "Shaky" Taylor (playing defence at the time) decided to head up ice on his own and netted the first goal of a steady come-back. Park- ed beside the net Sorley banged home a fake shot from Taylor to bring them within one. The tying goal was a result of an end to end rush by Kevin "Roo" Gibson who dished off to Jarret "Crackster"' Harman who popped his eighth goal of the year. Gibson scored the game winner at 2:18 of the third with assists going to Mike Sorley and Jim Vernon. On Saturday, Nov. 19, Port hosted it's own tournament. The first game was at 8:30 vs. Ux- bridge. Even though they aren't the rivals they used to be it hurt, as the Eagles lost 4-0. It was a poor effort (probably the worst of the year). However, in game two against Pickering, Port took control from the drop of the puck winning 9-0. Scoring two goals each were Taylor, Sean Bradbury and Mike - Sorley. Singles went to Harman, Derek Fitzgerald, and Jason Weinhold. Getting two assists were Sorley, Paul 'Gator' Wylie and Chris Legere, singles to Taylor, Gibson, Vernon, Harman, Bradbury, and Scott Porter. Because there were only four teams in the tournament Port ad- vanced to the finals against Ux- bridge. In a much closer contest Port held a 1-0 lead, (scored by Weinhold and assisted by Gibson) in the last minute but Uxbridge scored with 47 seconds left. This sent the game into overtime, played 3 on 3 with no goalies and you must be over the blue line to score. Uxbridge applied pressure but with an excellent defensive effort by Fitzgerald, Port managed to hold on. Taylor finally broke out of his end passing to Fitzgerald who hit Gibson with a crisp past (which he fumbled) and just as the puck was going past the net he made a fantastic effort and dove at the puck and knocked it in at the last second. Receiving the trophy was Captian Todd Taylor. On Saturday, Nov. 26, Port found themselves in Cobourg for another tournament without the aid of Assistant Captains Wylie and Gisbon. In game one against Oshawa Port took control in the second period and scored six unanswered goals to win the game. Vernon led the way with two goals and one assist. Singles went to Porter, Fitzgerald, Douma, Legere, and Sorley. Assists were Taylor and Harman with three, Bradbury and Douma with two, and Weinhold and Fitzgerald with singles. Playing Peterborough in the se- cond game the Eagles came up short losing 6-5. Scoring for Port were Jim Vernon with 2 goals and two assists, Taylor with 1 goal and 3 assists, Legere with two assists. Single goals went to Sorley and Bradbury and assists to Porter and Fitzie. The Eagles may have lost but they learned a lesson in their defeat. On Sunday, Port travelled to Oakwood to play Lindsay once again. With a poor start they won 9-4. Jim Vernon got 3 goals and four assists followed by Taylor with 2 goals and four assists. Also scor- ing two goals were Gibson and Douma. Getting two assists each were Legere, Bradbury, Harman, and Wylie, Scott Porter also pick- ed up an assist. The Eagles are off to a good start but they have their work cut out for them if they want to follow in the footsteps of last year's All Ontario Champs. We hope to see our fans out as last year's truly got their money's worth when it came down to the wire against Collingwood and Beainsville, remember?! They next hit the ice tonight in Cobourg and Monday, Dec. 5 at home vs. Bowmanville. Hope to see you out! |".
