Scoring for Port was Jeremy Geer assisted by Darryl Bourgeois and Tim Fitzpatrick and Tommy Chambers assisted by Sandy Mark & Craig Laird. Saturday morning was a dif- ferent story as the Green Machine travelled to Baysville for their an- nual tournament. Their 1st match-up was at 8 a.m. against an equally strong team from Pelham. Port opened the scoring in the 2nd period with a beautiful goal by Jeremy Geer assisted by defenseman Ian McCready. Nice work boys! Pelhan answered back 30 seconds later which tied the score at the end of the second period. Both teams played extremely well with many end to end rushes. The score remained tied until the last 5 minutes of the game when Pelham slipped in 2 more goals ending an excellent game 3-1. This tournament runs on the point system not solely by the final score of the game. You get 2 points for each period you win as long as you score, 1 point for a tied period and 3 points for the final overall score giving you the total maximum points of 9 per game. Port had 2 points at the end of the 1st game. The Atom No. 1's next op- ponents were a very aggressive team from Ajax. The boys came out on the ice all fired up and ready to win. Port opened the scoring in the 1st period on a tremendous rush up the ice by Bil- ly Zaparanuik. As the 2nd period Broomball results Goreskis squared off against the Blackstock Merchants and fought to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period. It wasn't until half way through the second that Ron Short scored for Blackstock assisted by R. Baird. Tom Wotten made the final score 2-0 for Blackstock as he scored with a pass from Ron Wagg. In the next broomball game of the day, Emmersons Insurance scored in the first shift when Karl Durham connected with a Greg Davis pass. B & L. Unfortunately for Port Billy was taken off the ice with an ankle in- jury in the 2nd period which left Port with 3 defencemen for the re- mainder of the game. Nearing the end of the 2nd period Port broke out with a burst of speed and within 30 seconds had 2 powerful goals. The first was a great line effort as Tommy Chambers poked the puck past the Ajax netminder assisted by Craig Laird & Sandy Mark. Seconds later wingman Daryl Bourgeois picked up a well ex- ecuted pass from Kenton LeFort & Kirk Swain to put Port on top 3-0. Ajax got their lone marker with a minute left in the period but that still wasn't enough to give them any points. Kenton LeFort assured Port's 2 more points in the second period as he beat the Ajax goaltender after picking up a pass from defenceman Jay King. The game ended - Port on top 4-1 and 9 more points. Port's final opponents of the day were from Gravenhurst. This was a must win for Port. They had to get 9 points to make it into the consolation finals. Knowing this the Green Machine came out and skated, passed, checked and shot the very best they could. Port jumped into the lead early in the game as Sandy Mark rocketed a shot between the pipes assisted by Matt Morris. Two minutes later it was Jay Tredway's turn to blast his incredable wrist shot past the goalie, assisted again by Matt Morris and Jeremy Geer. Nice work boys. hard all game but failed to put the ball in the net. Charlie Dennis wrapped the game up with an unassisted goal. Emmersons win 2-0. As the second period was coming to an end Daryl Bourgeois added the assurance goal as he scored from a scramble in front of the net, this time assisted by Kirk Swain and Kenton LeFort. There could not be more excitement generated in one period than what was being sent out as the 3rd period opened up. Port had countless chances to score but were unable at each at- tempt even though they were all over their opposition. As the period was coming to a close and only 1 minute remain- ing, Gravenhurst picked up a penalty giving Port the advan- tage. As the clock was winding down Jay King stole the puck and with all his might let go with one of his patented wrist shots beating the goaltender with only 1 second to go. I have never seen such a burst of excitement from 15 boys, 2 coaches and many fans before, there were sticks & gloves everywhere. Congratulations boys and "way to use it" Jay!! Jay's goal gave Port the points needed to put them into the finals! The first consolation champion- ship game was played on Sunday afternoon and what a fabulous match-up it was. Port faced off against a fine team from Burl- ington. Port Perry was not long in getting on the scoreboard as Jay Tredway stole the puck and scored a beautiful lone goal. Merely 90 seconds later Sandy Mark . banged in goal No. 2 assisted by linemates Craig Laird and Tommy Chambers. Burl- ington scored a goal to end the period 2-1. Port Perry skated circles around Burlington but it was their outstanding goaltending that kept them in the game. Port's Daryl Bourgeois played a very good game this afternoon challenging the opposition at every turn. Scot Prechitko and Ian Shrigley 'shared goaltending duties throughout the tournament and both boys were unbeatable, play- ing exceptionally outstanding bet- ween the pipes. Although Port and Burlington went head to head throughout the 2nd & 3rd period, neither team could seem to score. When the final buzzer went off to end the game Port Perry's Malmont Farms had won the game 2-1. p.o. box 420 68 scugog street, perry, ont.
