Sponsored by the Ontario Com- munity Newspapers Association and Canadian airlines, the award honours young people who are in- volved in worthwhile community service, who have overcome dis- abling physical or psychological limitations, or who have per- formed acts of heroism. Pini a cheerful fair-haired 17 year old, has all the above qualifi- cations. She was nominated by her father and her biggest fan, Ron Mollon. "When I saw the ad in the paper about the Ontario Junior Citizen award, I couldn't think of anyone more deserving than Tracey," Ron said. Indeed, an hour spent with Tra- cey confirms his enthusiasm. She is bright, confident and is gener- ous with both her time and her talents. She is now in Grade 11 at Port Perry High School, and on her most recent report card, Tracey came out with an average of 77%. Not a bad mark by any stretch of the imagination, but it's particu- larly excellent for Tracey, who has a diagnosed learning disability. Clear signs of problems were re- vealed to Tracey's parents when she failed Grade One, repeated the year, and then failed again. The school wanted Tracey to try one more time, but it was obvious to her father that something was wrong--someone who tried as hard as Tracey should have been excel- ling, not failing. So he took her to a local doctor who in turn sent Tracey to the Hospital for Sick Children in To- ronto, where a battery of tests were done. Eventually, Tracey was diag- nosed as having difficulties judg- ing space and distance, that some- how connected with her problems in reading and spelling. BE i. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 29, 1988 -- 3 Since that time, Tracey, with the help of a teacher who special- izes in assisting students with learning disabilities, has worked incessantly at school. This year, for example, she works constantly, fitting her stud- ies into every spare minute--at lunch hour, before school, after school, in the evenings and on weekends. In 1985-86, Tracey won the L.O.D.E. award for most deserving student. She is proud of the 77% average on her report card, but says the mark took "mega-work. " At the same time her learning difficulties were announced, doc- tors revealed Tracey had great co- ordination. Ron Mollon decided it would be a boon for Tracey's self-confidence if he could help her find a hobby that would develop her natural co- ordination, so he signed her up for guitar lessons. Unfortunately, the lessons didn't work out. Tracey found readin music too difficult, and frustra she abandoned the guitar. Equally frustrated, Ron looked elsewhere for something to inter- est his daughter, and when a local man Rob Dodds, started a karate class, Ron took Tracey there. At first, Tracey hated it. "I was watching what they were - friend. Tracy | loves people. . . . the more the better! doing in the class and thinking, there's no way I could do that," she recalls. But with an open mind she gave it her best shot, and by the time she turned 15, Tracey had eamed her black belt. She was the first person in the Wado-Kai Karate Federation to receive a black belt at such a tender age. In her six years of studying ka- rate, kata and sparring, Tracey has won numerous awards. She also teaches her classmates at the Latcham Centre, where the club is based. One would think schoolwork and karate at least twice a week would be enough to keep any teenager busy, but Tracey does so much more. In fact, her part-time "job" is so consuming that she has decided to make a career out of helping the physically and mentally chal- lenged. She is completely devoted to these people, working for Central Seven in group homes on her own time, and in the Central Seven workshop, through the Durham Board of Education's Co-op pro- gram.
