Some of the special guests in- troduced included MPP Sam Cu- reatz, Staff-Sgt Henry Raetson and Inspector Bob Brown from the Re- gional Police, and Regional chair- man Gary Herrema, himself facing re-election this week for another term as the chairman of Durham. Now that the necessary for- malities are out of way, the new council will get down to real busi- ness in seven days. The first regular meeting of the new term is slated for Decem- ber 12 with a heavy business agenda. Susan Lee and family lit the Ad- vent Candle and the Jim Thomson family placed the flame on the Advent banner made by the Primary Sunday School class. The choir sang "Thats Christmas' which blended into the theme of the service. Upcoming Events Next Sunday will be the White Gift Service. Sr. Choir practice will be every Thurs. evening at 8:15 in preparation for the Christmas Eve service. The Jr. Choir will meet on Wed. afternoon for the last regular practice of this year. They will be singing next Sun. morning also at the Sunday School concert and on Christmas Eve. Old Fashioned Carol Sing on Fri. evening, Dec. 9th at Seagrave United Church. Christmas Concert on Wednes- day, December 14th. If you would like to order a Pointsettia for the Church in memory of a loved one; please order before Dec. 14th. Call 985-3420. The community was saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Mrs. Leonard Beadle. Reta and Leonard lived in Greenbank for many years, our sympathy is ex- tended to Leonard and all the family. Mrs. Eileen Jarvis and Mrs. Alita Leask have returned from a two week holiday at Daytona Beach, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Shadlock of Agincourt visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Couper- thwaite, later Margaret attended the Anniversary Church Service at Wallace Memorial in Scarborough. There are a few tickets left for the annual Christmas Dance on December 10th. Please call 985-8239 for more details. Several from the Greenbank area attended the Uxbridge Chambers Choir Christmas presentation, under the direction of Tom Baker. The milk truck drivers Christmas Dinner Party was held on Sat. evening in the Greenbank Hall, when they also honoured Mr. Ross Cookman on his retire- ment as driver for the Greenbank Cartage Co. and presented him with a beautiful clock and other gifts. Later everyone enjoyed an evening of music and dancing. The Women's Institute Pot Luck Christmas Luncheon will be at the home of Helen McKean at 12:30 on Wed., Dec. 14th (a week early). Come and bring your neighbour. We need ladies for the basket- ball and Volleyball event on Thurs. evening at 8:00-9:30 - also more people to make this pro- gram a success. Call 985-9127. We are sorry to see Ruby Dus- ty and Earl Phoenix are nursing very sore fingers. Our sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Rodd in the death of Jean's mother, Mrs. Camplin of Sunderland. (October 29, Toronto Star) We write on behalf of Port Per- ry High School's Grade 11 Eng- lish class. We made a list of what we believe an educated person should be like and found that our list greatly differs from yours. We feel our list and our opin- ions are relevant because we are the ones going through the school system that you're knocking. Ten Qualities Of An Edu- cated Person: 1) A wide variety of experiences. 2) Maturity/responsibility--ability to make your own decisions, re- sponsible to family and self. 3) Awareness of contemporary world affairs. 4) Initiative--at work, at home, etc. 5) Ability to read at a Grade 10 level. 6) A grasp of the major math con- cepts--multiply, divide, add, sub- tract. 7) Open-minded--receptive to oth- ers' ideas. 8) Extensive vocabulary. 9) Ability to converse using com- plete (grammatically correct) sen- tences. 10) Ability to make the best of any situation.
