a. I HH HY HH jm hes, The Port Perry Goreski Ban- tams got in some hard-hitting hockey this weekend as they travelled to estown for a tour- nament. Their first game was against a solid, fast-skating squad from Kingston. It was a thriller to watch as both teams had lots of chances to cash in on the other's Auto Wreckers come up short The Whitby Auto Wreckers team from the Port Perry Atom House League had a chance to play in the annual tournament .¢ld over the weekend in King City. It was a great chance for the players to see some "new faces" on the opposite side of the centre line and face some tough opposi- tion. In game one against King | City, the home team scored first on a rebound, but Darren Kinnu- nen tied the game on a breakaway marker. After King City took a 2-1 lead, Jason Brown evened things up, but the home team prevailed, despite the best efforts from the JR. 'C° HOCKEY SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11th Wreckers. The Wreckers still had a chance to get into the Consolation final when they faced Sutton. Ryan Diceman made some big stops in the Wreckers goal, but Sutton scored first. Jason Brown replied for Port, but that was all the scoring the Wreckers could manage as Sutton won the game. The players enjoyed them- selves and played some good hockey. They thank the work by coach Larry Morden and manager Dave Bentley. The team hopes to have a lot better luck at another tournament this coming weekend. The first period went by quickly with no scoring, and in the second, Port notched the first marker by Jason Cochrane who was set up by Steve Laird and Brett Puckrin. That goal stood until late in the third when Kingston scored controversial one with just 30 seg- onds to play. Shawn Larocque played very well in the Port nets and really de- served the shut-out that was taken away from him. Steve Laird was the Port MVP in this one. Port had little trouble in game two against a fairly weak Kitchen- er team, as the team rolled to a 7- 1 score. Todd Taylor, Jeff Brett, Jason Towns, John Ennis, Jason Co- chrane, Steve Staniland and Steve Laird fired the goals. Ray Doyle handled the goal- keeping chores and he had to be very sharp at times. Todd Taylor was the game MVP for Port. Game three was 8:00 Sunday morning against the host team from Earnestown. After the Port players man- aged to shake the cob-webs free and wake up, they turned in a sol- id game for a 4-2 victory. Dan Sluggett scored twice in the first, and Jeff Parry chipped in with a single. Todd Taylor made it 4-0 in the final frame before the home team struck for two late in the game. Sluggett was our MVP for the game, with his two goals, and some great defensive work. Port earned a berth in the semi-finals as the "wild card" team with a plus-13 goals average. And a fast skating, hard hit- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 6, 1988 -- 29 Bantams advance to tournament final ting team from Bancroft was the opposition in the semis. Jody Logan and John Ennis staked Port to an early 2-0 lead, but Bancroft replied to make the game close. But Jeff Parry broke the Ban- croft team with two goals in the third to make the final 4-1. MVP for Port was Larocque for his strong game in the cage. THE FINAL It was perhaps fitting that the final game should be against the Port Bantams arch-rivals from Co- bourg. There is no love lost between these teams and when they hit the ice, the temperatures go up a notch or two. Playing with just half an hour's rest, Port got on the board ATTENTION BUSINESSES ... Cobourg tied the game in the second and it stayed that way until they had a power play in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Brett put some life into a tired Port squad to tie the game, but Cobourg salted it away with two more for a 4-2 win. Port had to settle for the run- ner-up trophy, but the players had nothing to feel ashamed about as they put in five fine hockey games in a single weekend. Coach Todd Wilbur and his players will be fine-tuning things in time for playoffs. If you want to see the Port Bantams in action, try December 7 at the Scugog Arena when Bow- manville pays a visit.
