Last year, approximately 30,000 vehicles were stolen in this pro- vince. Detective Sergeant Bob Carpenter of the Ontario Provin- cial Police Auto Theft Squad says that a professional car thief can steal a vehicle in less than a minute by "hot wiring" it -- that is, breaking into the ignition system. But it can also be done in a less obvious way, using a tow truck. The thief pulls up, connects the desired vehicle and simply drives away. "Many people may seeit," says Carpenter, 'but no one thinks anything of it." Although 80 per cent of vehicles stolen in Ontario are recovered (since most are taken by joy- riders and later abandoned), they are often heavily damaged.
