The Port Perry Atom II team came off a busy week of action with 2 wins and 2 losses in league and exhibition play; and, as runners-up in the Consolation round of the Ops tournament held Saturday, December 3rd. All of the games, regardless of the out- come, provided fans with some fine demonstrations of heads-up hockey both offensively and defensively; many outstanding individual efforts, some red hot goal tending and plenty of excitement! Pineridge started off the week on Monday evening, November 28, on a positive note with a 3-2 victory in Bowmanville. Port Perry was first to light up the scoreboard on a goal by Kent Taylor and assist by Darryl Moase. Bowmanville netted two goals in the 2nd and carried the lead until halfway through the 3rd. Scoring in the final all belong- ed to Port Perry. Kent with his se- cond of the night tied the game and just at the final minute mark, Darryl Moase was back in the scoring with the winner. Jeff Clarke on defense had a hand in both the 3rd period goals. Port Perry didn't fare quite as well when they travelled to Baltimore on Thursday evening. Two goals in the middle of the 1st period, only 15 seconds apart, pro- ved that Baltimore wasn't going to be happy going away with anything less than a win in this one. Their strong forechecking and positional play prevented Pineridge from mounting any real dangerous attacks and held our team to 16 shots on goal over the night. It wasn't until late in the game, and after Baltimore jumped ahead into a 6 goal lead, that Port Perry got onto the Board. Port's single tally came from Kent Taylor with an assist going to Kevin Gray. In spite of the score, Branden Hammond and Darryl Holtby came up with some pretty impressive goalten- ding, handling a number of dif- ficult shots and coming out on top in a lot of scrambles in front On Friday, it was obvious that the Pineridge squad was going to reverse the events of the previous 'night. From the opening faceoff against visiting Stouffville, the rush into the visitors' end resulted in Jason Logan setting up Kent Taylor for the first goal with only 18 seconds used up on the clock. Before the first minute was over, Port Perry chalked up it's second goal. This time it was Todd Parry assisted by Kent Taylor and Matt Mantel. Halfway through the 1st period Stouffvile got things going with a goal while enjoying a two player advantage. Before the period finished however, Kevin Gray responded for Port Perry with what would be his first of three goals for the night, and Kent Taylor counted his second with help from Todd Parry and Darryl Moase. Stouffville countered late in the 1st with their second goal, scooping it in from behind the net. Second period scoring opened and closed with Kevin Gray's other two goals. The first of these was assisted by Greg Thompson; ~ the second by Matt Mantel. In bet- ween Ryan Williams scored on a play which was started by Shawn Lewerentz. Stouffville finished off the scoring in the game with two more goals but only after Greg Thompson scored Port Perry's 8th goal of the night. Assists on Greg's marker went to Darryl Moase and Jeff Jamieson. Even though Port Perry won the game comfortably, they did suffer a loss. Todd parry, who consistently works hard both of- fensively and defensively suffered a hand injury after a crash into the boards in the second period. Although he hasn't missed a game and is still contributing to the team spirit from the bench, we're all hoping to see Todd back in action on the ice real soon! In the Ops tournament, Port Perry took two tough losses in games that could have just as easily been in their favour. Both games ended in 4-2 scores; both ended with Port Perry going to a six player attack in the dying minutes, and, Port at one time had the lead in each of the games. As luck would have it however, events did not turn in Port Perry's favour. Goals for Pineridge in the 1st game against Lindsay went to Greg - Thompson and to Kent Taylor. Kevin Gray provided the support on Kent's goal. In the 2nd game against Ops, Kent Taylor and Greg Thompson again ac- counted for the goals, this time with Darryl Moase getting an assist in the first one and Kevin Gray on the second. In their third game of the day things turned around for Port Perry with their efforts turning into goals instead of near misses. In the 6-2 win over Cannington unassisted goals went to Jeff Jamieson, Matt Hobbs and Kevin Gray. Darryl Moase counted 2 goals, one set up by Matt Hobbs and the other by Kent Taylor. Greg Thompson and Darryl Moase also figured in Kent's single goal. Also coming up with strong performances were Darryl Holtby and Brandon Hammond in goal whose fine efforts kept Port Perry in every game right down to the end. On the offensive line, Brad Shanley won more than his share of the face offs and Ryan Williams contributed with some consistent forechecking and backchecking. Jason Logan, Brad Norton, Shawn Lewerentz and Jeff Clarke made fine defensive plays getting the puck out of the corners and clearing the end. A great effort guys, better luck in your next tournament. The weeks action ended with Markham visiting Port Perry for PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 6, 1988 -- 35 Atom B squad reaches Consolation final an evening game. This match up saw a lot of end to end action with gaining a two goal lead in the 1st period. Before it was over however, Markham narrowed the margin to one. Port took charge again in the 2nd making it 3-1 but, it would be their final goal of the night. The 3rd started with Markham being down by one but Port Perry's efforts to stave off the attack was not enough. Markham came back to tie it up and then got the go ahead goal with three minutes left in the game. Action resumes this coming weekend with a tournament in Bobcaygeon. Keep digging boys and good luck!
