A team made up of (from left) Doug Brown, lead, Bill Hutchinson (vice skip) David Roth (2nd) and Scott Howey skip, won the Bonspiel held November 26 at the Port Perry Curling Club. Port Juvies dump Petes 3-2 by Rob Jamieson On December 6 the Port Perry "Key-Bar" Juveniles hosted the Peterborough Petes Juvenile club and came out with a decisive 3-2 win. A fine strong game was shown by the forwards as they found the opposing net with the puck. Opening the scoring for Port was Willie Edwards from Port Perry's hockey veteran, John Lally. Port struck again at the 5:50 mark of the second period when Steve "Crazy Cooter' Solomon scored on a second effort, rush by a pass from Rob Jamieson. Peter- borough came back to score to make it 2-1. The Key-Bar Juvies went on to increase the lead at the 2:24 mark of the second period when Andrew Steele scored from a beautifully executed pass from Jamie "Want A Snowmobile" Menzies and We'd like to kindle your in- terest in Lindal Cedar Homes. Peterborough scored for the last time at the 37 second mark of the third period. The Key-Bar Juvies went on to win a well fought hockey game. Special mention goes to Karl Durham who played net for the first time in 10 years. Our player of the week was unanimous as it goes to Karl Durham for his excellent play. Sorry, Karl, no photo. The Juvies have shown already this season that in All-Ontario chance is possible if the excellent coaching of Dave Barkey con- tinues. Also with Wayne King and have "Shreddie" Smith at the helm things are definitely going our way. The 11:00 game was with a team from Warkworth with first period goals by Kevin Gray, unassisted and Todd Parry assisted by Darryl Moase. By the end of the second period Port Perry had tallied 2 more goals both by Todd Parry with one assisted by Jason Logan. Con- gratulations to Todd Parry who was awarded a Bobcaygeon hat for his hat trick and to the team for their 4-1 victory. The hometown Bobcaygeon team came up against the Pineridge boys in the second game and it was soon obvious that Port had a far stronger team. Bobcaygeon was able to hold the line for the 1st period but the 2nd and 3rd periods were easy pick- ings for the Port Perry team. Points awarded in this game went to Todd Parry - 2 goals, 2 assists, Darryl Moase - 2 goals, 1 assist, Matt Hobbs - 1 goal, 1 assist, Greg Thompson - 1 goal, 1 assist, Matt Mantel - 1 goal, Kevin Gray - 1 goal, Kent Taylor - 2 assists and Jason Logan - 1 assist. Shawn Lewerentz made a beautiful rink end rush to tally the nineth goal unassisted. On Sunday the teams returned early for the silver stick competi- tion in which Kent Taylor, Darryl Moase and Brandon Hammond represented the Pineridge Team. All three boys did very well with an enthusiastic group of Port Perry fans urging them on. Immediately following the com- petition Port Perry played against one of their regular league rivals, Lindsay. Although Port Perry dominated the play in the first period Lindsay managed to tally the lone goal. In the second period the Pineridge boys found themselves playing 3 to 5 but terrific defen- sive play by Jeff Clarke, Kevin Gray and Jason Logan kept Lind- say off the scoreboard. The tying PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 13, 1988 -- 27 goal for this period was scored by Todd Parry assisted by Darryl Moase. The third period saw lots of fast action with both teams working hard for a position in the finals. Once again in this period Pineridge was outnumbered while 2 men sat in the box and they had to muster all their energy to kill the penalty. Bran- don Hammond in goal played very well holding back the power- play attack. A diving play by Todd Parry resulted in a goal with assists to Kent Taylor and Darryl Moase. In desperation Lindsay pulled their goalie with 1:34 remaining in the 3rd period but they were shut down. With 23 total points in their 3 games Pineridge was assured of a place in the cham- pionship game. Bracebridge came into the championship game with a perfect 27 pts. and proved to be a formidable foe. This game would separate the men from the boys. Darryl Holtby started in goal and Bracebridge was able to put the first one past him. Lady luck was with Bracebridge for its second goal as the puck took a bad hop and bounced in off one of our own boys sticks to get by Brandon Hammond. During the second period a scramble in front of the net had Ryan Williams, Brad Shanley and Kent Taylor all banging at the puck but miraculously it didn't go in. The third goal for Bracebridge was scored on a tired line that just couldn't back check to stop the op- posing teams rush. Brad Morton made a great shot from the point but was foiled. Jeff Jamieson stopped a breakaway by Bracebridge with a slick poke check and then made a beautiful pass right onto Matt Hobbs stick but his shot just missed the mark. Most of the 3rd period action was in Port's own end with our tired players scrambling but being out hustled and out muscled. Darryl Holtby was back in goal for the last 5 minutes and held off the attack with super stops. Both goalies are to be commended for their fine stand up playing bet- ween the pipes as the Bracebridge team constantly kept the pressure on with numerous shots. The 2 best chances in the 3rd period came from rushes by Greg Thompson and Ryan Williams but they were stopped cold. The game ended with a well deserved victory for Bracebridge who played a well organized balanced game with a super team effort. Congratulations to the Pineridge Atoms who were awarded trophies for being runners-up in the championship game. Tough outing On Saturday, Dec. 10 the Bruton's I.D.A. Petite team travelled to Oshawa to play an ex- hibition game. Unfortunately our Port Perry girls came out rather flat & allowed the Oshawa squad to take control & score almost at will. The only bright spot for the Bruton's team was when Joan Anderson scored from Heather Lally & Vicki Stainton midway through the first period. From this point on Oshawa took over to finish the game 12 to 1. Although this game was not a good example of the talent that this team has it was a lesson in ex- perience as this is the type of teams we will be playing in future tournaments. Our next action will be in Sunderland Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 6:15 p.m. for another league game.
