On the Bantam side, the Sport- sland club lost two tight games to be eliminated from the competi- tion. Uxbridge eked out a 4-3 over- time victory in the opening game of the day, and the Oshawa Minor Bantam Red Wings came out on top 3-2 with a late goal. The Oshawa team went on to beat Ux- bridge in the final by 11-2. Atom Lions faced rivals The Port Perry Lions Club of the Atom House League reached the B championship in the annual Oakwood hockey tourament held over the weekend. The Lions faced Gord Lewis for the championship Sunday af- ternoon, a rival team from the Atom House League in Port Per- ry. A fired up Lewis gang roared out of the starting gate and had the Lions on the ropes to the tune of 6-0 early in the second period. The Lions finally shook the cob webs away and notched a couple of quick goals by Matt McClelland from Scott Prechitko and then Matt Philips from Terry Jellicoe. They continued to press in the late stages of the second and through the third, but the Lewis team held the fort and won the match and the B championship by a 6-2 score. Full marks to the Lewis team on a fine effort. The Lions had to play some fine hockey to reach the B final, with three games on Saturday. While the boys were battling it out on the ice, the parents were battling the cold in the ice box that poses as the Cannington Are- na. Game on at 8:00 AM Satur- day resulted in a 6-0 Lions win over Cannington. Terry Jellicoe had three, with Matt Philips neeting two and a single to Scott Prechitko. Jamie trick got the shut-out for Lions. The second game against Oshawa St. Marks was the best the Lions have played all season. This was a see-saw battle all the way with St. Marks pullin out a 4-3 win with a goal with just 34 seconds to play. Phil Donnelly worked hard for two assists, Pre- chitko had one assist as did Phil- ips. Coaches Eric Donnelly and Gary Smith were pretty proud of the boys after the effort they put out in this tough loss. The game Saturday afternoon that put Lions into the B final was against rival Whitby Auto from the local House League. Lions were still pumped up from the previous game and jumped into a quick 3-0 lead, then played solidly the rest of the way for a 4-2 victory over the Auto Wreckers. Jellicoe with a pair, and McClelland, Prechitko handled the scoring in this one, with assists to Donnelly and Colin Outram. The team played some fine hockey in this tournament. Al- though he didn't figure in the scor- ing, Noah Smith worked hard in every game, and along the blue line, the defense of Devon Blair, Trevor Smith, Colin Outram and Greg Pugh protected netminders Jamie trick and Ryan Duff. The coaches were very pleased with the way the team played in this tournament. i i Port Perry Minor Hockey president Don Steele presents the IGA trophy to Uxbridge Midgets captain Justin Dunham after Uxbridge doubled the Port Perry Midget B's 4-2 in the tournament played Saturday at the Scugog Arena. In the Bantam fi- nal, Oshawa defeated Uxbridge 11-2. The Port Bantam B's were knocked out early, losing both games by the closest of scores. (see article for details) Tweens post 5-4 victory Chris Allen Aluminum Tweens came out flying on Sunday and had their first win in quite a while, dropping Oshawa 5-4. From the opening whistle, Port played a very strong game and probably one of their best this year. On their first possession, Valerie Payne assisted by Tanya Towns and Jennifer Morden found the net open and pumped in a goal to make it 1-0. Oshawa tied it nine minutes later but Amy Parliament from Tanya, made it 2-1 and Amy again from Shannon Fox made it 3-1. Valerie Payne scored again on a nice pass from Amy to finish the first period 4-1. It seemed like things were go- ing our way, until midway through the second period when Oshawa came back with 2 quick goals to make it 4-3. Kendra McCrae and Amy were able to set up Shannon who beat the Oshawa goalie to make it 5-3, but Oshawa came back with 2:04 left to make it 5-4. Then the battle was on. Instruc- tions were given for everyone to play as hard as possible in the time remaining, and Oshawa never got another shot on net. Tracy Pelow played her first full game in net for quite some time and kept us in the game. A great game was played all around and it's great to see the girls getting better every outing. It could be the early morning practises or they might figure Santa Claus is watching, but whatever it is, they're looking great. The cold weather must have shrunk the net as we had several shots, that just missed the hole. Strong checking is once again becoming a dominant factor in our games, and the skating speed is constantly increasing, as the coaches are finding it harder to keep up. Our next game is this Sunday at 12:30 in Port Perry when we host our friends from Woodville in an exhibition game. Should be a gocd one.
