Parking study shows how to create 250 more spaces A study prepared by the Downtown Merchants Association (DMA) says that up to 250 addi- tional parking spaces could be created in the business core area. The study was presented to the new Township council Monday afternoon by David Menzies and Bob Alexander, both members of the DMA sub-committee that looked into the parking problem in downtown Port Perry. In presenting the study to council, Mr. Alexander said down- town merchants are hearing "numerous complaints" from cus- tomers over the lack of parking, and over the fact that parking areas are poorly laid out and often not properly signed. It was because-of these com- plaints that the DMA set up the sub-committee to look at the problems and suggest some reme- dial action. "There is no question that there is a parking problem, and it's not going to go away," said Mayor Howard Hall. The study was turned over to the council's roads committee for further examination, but Mayor Hall said the committee would act quickly. "We (the council) are not go- ing to make any promises today, but we will certainly attempt to do something," (correct the prob- lems) The study suggests that the up-grading of existing lots and the creation of a new lot on Queen Street would cost just under $70,000. That new lot, for about 50 new spaces, would be on the old lawn bo wling green beside the Durham Y building. The study also recommends up-grading the parking areas around the Township offices; im- provements to the former arena pad behind the Bank of Com- merce; and extensive grading and marking of the lot behind the Post Office. Council discussed the study at length, and while there was unani- mous agreement that action is needed to improve parking and create more spaces, there was some concern over the fact that the lands behind the Post Office Mortgage Loans are not owned by the municipali- ty. Also the suggestion to turn the lawn bowling green into park- ing could be a problem because that area is a flood plain for the small creek that runs along the north side of the property. Ward 2 councillor Marilyn Pearce suggested that priority be given to the recommendations for the lands behind the Post Office because that's where most of the improvements could be made at a cost of about $14,000. Mr. Alexander said that a 1973 report on the parking prob- lems suggests that by 1991 the downtown core will be 180 park- ing spaces short of what it needs. The current study noted that the lack of parking spaces is just part of the overall problem, com- pounded by the fact design, condi- tion, accessibility and visibility of existing parking areas are below standard. The DMA committee also suggested that signs be erected on the approach routes to the down- town area to let visitors know they are nearing the business dis- trict. Council appoints new committees Don Cochrane, Allan Gore- ski and Yvonne Christie have been named chairmen of the three Township council standing com- mittees.
