Winter programs now registering at the YMCA The Durham Region Family YMCA is now accepting registra- tion for the Winter '89 Season. A variety of new and exciting pro- - grams are being introduced along with our regular programming. For the pre-schooler, the 'Y' is offering 3 new programs. Letting Loose with Mother Goose is a craft, music and story program based on those familiar Mother Goose Rhymes. Using a variety of rhymes your pre-schooler will learn math concepts, music and language arts as well as develop- ing self-confidence. and co- operative skills. The program runs on Monday afternoons at the P.P. United Church. A second New Program is "Music and Make Believe" for 21% to 5 yr. olds. Through singing, hand ac- tions; movement poetry and per- cussion, small imaginations can grow and grow. Music and dance are intregrated in our 3rd New Program called Musical Move- ~ ment. This Wednesday evening program mixes ballet and jazz steps as well as creative expres- sion. Returning programs for pre- schoolers include Kindergym, Junior Gymnastics, Creative Crafts and Tiny Tots. The players will be divided into 2 age groups -- 9-12 yrs. and 13 and up and the emphasis is on low-key competition, sportsmanship and fun. Also on the physical side, the YMCA in conjunction with Ski Canada is pleased to offer the Jackrabbit Ski program for children ages 8-13. This cross- country ski league teaches the fundamentals and proper techni- ques of skiing in a relaxed at- mosphere. Awards and badges are earned for newly acquired skills. Participants must supply their own equipment and - transportation. The program begins Sat. Jan. 21 at Durham Regional Forest (weather permitting). The YMCA is also offering 2 New Enrichment programs for children. Keyboarding is a new music program for ages 7 and up. A small group format is used to teach the basics of playing keyboards (must have one to practice on). This program runs Monday evenings at Irwin Smith % Cait] b Utica I Dl 'Community Daycare Centre Inc. Music and experience is not necessary. Our final new pro- gram is called Stage Struck. This theatre arts program is for children ages 8-12 years and teaches the basics of dancing, singing, mime and performing. This 10-week course will be taught by Zakeanna Reid begin- ning Jan. 23. Returning programs include Judo, Wrestling, Floor Hockey, Crafts and Babysitting Training. The YMCA hasn't forgotten the Adults in our Winter Programm- ing. On the physical side, we are again offering 45-Minute Work- Out as well as a new Yoga pro- gram which combines physical posture, breathing, relaxation and a less stressful lifestyle. For the men, Adult Floor Hockey is a great way to stay in shape while having fun. Also during February (Heart Month) the 'Y' in conjunc- tion with Durham Save-a-Heart will offer CPR courses. There's plenty to do for young and old at the YMCA this winter season.
