Come this Spring, our fine- feathered friends will be fighting each other to secure a room at the fanciest bird house in Port Perry. No ordinary bird house this, we're talking a mansion in the sky, a virtual palace for warm- blooded vertebrae on the wing. But alas, not all birdies will be allowed to board in this luxurious estate--only Purple Martens are permitted in the house that Mike built. There's room for 14 Purple Marten nests in the house local dentist Dr. Mike Garfat construct- ed as a Christmas present for his good friend and fellow dentist Dr. Jack Cottrell. Last September, Dr. Garfat de- cided, "I'd like to give Jack some- thing nice for Christmas to say thanks." Apparently Dr. Cottrell had done Dr. Garfat a few favours, and the latter hoped to express his ap- preciation with a really special present. Out of the blue, the idea hit him. "It just sort of came to me one day," Dr. Garfat recalls. And it didn't sound too difficult. All he wanted to do was build a Purple Marten house that would look exactly like Dr. Cottrell's house. Jack and Patsy Cottrell and their children live in a beautiful old yel- low brick house, built in classic Italianate style, on the north side of Highway 7A, halfway between Port Perry and Manchester. You can't help but notice the house when driving by. (Re- nowned artist Carole Black no- ticed, and recently painted the Cot- trell house--she signed many of the prints with an enthusiastic "I love Port Perry!") To start off, Dr. Garfat took photos of the structure, and then "I snuck up one day and measured the entire house." Purple Marten enthusiast and expert bird house builder Bill Barr of Seagrave, gave Dr. Garfat the pre-requisites for a Purple Marten house (specifications such as the size of the holes, the dimensions of the nests, etc.), which he used to draw up plans. Quite by acci- dent, the plans wound up to be on a scale of 1:24, a standard scale size. Also by accident, Dr. Garfat was introduced to Paul Hodgins, a Sunderland woodworker, who gave the dentist all sorts of woodwork- ing tips, and allowed him to use his workshop. With Mr. Hodgins help, the walls of the bird house were up but the details occupied all of Dr. Garfat's free time right from September to a few days before Christmas. The finished product is amazing- ly realistic. The widow's walk has iron railing on top. The windows are not just painted, but outlined with real wood sills. Even the gingerbread trim is just like the real thing.
