For various reasons the Port-Perry team was playing with a depleted bench line up which decreased as the game pro- gressed. All those present played an excellent three periods as they proved to have a lot of stamina and were still matching the Newcastle team play for play at the end of the third period with on- ly two extra players left on the bench. When the final buzzer sounded Port Perry had scored two goals to Newcastles four. One marker was scored by Mare Haina, who scored on a re- bound which popped out in front of the net, Haina picked up the puck quickly shooting it into the open side of the net. Port's other goal came off the stick of Ethan Lavereau who managed some fancy stick handling behind the net to elude the opposition. Lavereau carried the puck to the front of the goalie to pop it nicely into the net. Port Perry played a strong game, but luck just wasn't with the team for this night. In Novice House League ac- tion recently, there were two games of a completely different nature: one close checking, the other a high scoring shoot-out. For David's Glen McCready recorded the shut-out, and Troy Campbell played well in net for IGA Jay Fletcher had a goal and two assists for the winners, and Jeff Gunn and Scott Harper also had a goal each. There were no penalties in this one. In the other high scoring game, Van Camp at one point led 5-2, but Re/Max stormed back to make it a real contest with three goals in the final period. Scott Sanderson paced Van Camp with four big goals, and singles were added by Ryan Puck- rin. Atom House League December 24 Lake Scugog Lumber 5 Gord Lewis Motors 2 The first game of the day saw the Lumbermen jump into a fast 3-0 in the first 5 minutes of the game and regain first place in the league. Jon Jamieson opened the scoring as he and Stewart Bruce broke in on a defenceless Kyle McClymont. Then just seconds later Jon again found the net com- pleting a nice 3 way play with Stewart Bruce and Jason Hopkins picking up the helpers. Again this hot line of the Lumbermen struck with Jon finding a wide open Stewart Bruce who skated in from the blue line alone blasted the puck past a defenceless Kyle. Lewis finally got on track with Matt Baxter scoring on a good 3 way play assisted by Kristen Wooton and Robert Gracie. Then from the faceoff Kristen Wooton and Scott Swain brokeinona 2 on 1 and with the defenceman play- ing Kristen fed a pass to Scott whose shot just managed to get through Ian Johnson's pads and cross the line to make the score 3-2 at the end of the first. The second period saw both teams pick up the tempo and keep the pressure on each other but both goalies came up big time and time again. Matt Brown got the only goal of the second period when he picked up a loose puck and fired a screened shot past Kyle to up their lead to 4-2 heading into the last period. Again this period saw Lewis put on the pressure but were unable to score. Then the big 2 from Scugog broke out with Stewart Bruce and Jon Jamieson which saw Jon collect his third goal of the game and Stewart get his third assist to close out the scor- ing for this game. Tripp 5 Whitby Auto Wreckers 3 This game saw Matt Phoenix return after a leg injury and spark Tripp to a hard fought vic- tory. Both goaltenders Ryan Diceman for Whitby and Michael Wilson for Tripp saw plenty of rubber come their way as both teams were fighting to stay close to the top. Tripp's big three then went to work on the next goal with Michael Leeming and Steven Cochrane setting up Matt for his second of the period. On a power-play to open the se- cond Tripp's big three again went to work with Matt collecting his third of the day assisted by Michael and Steven once again. Darren Kinnunen got Whitby on the score sheet with a fine in- dividual rush. Less than 3 minutes later David Kemp and Mark Turnbull hooked up with David getting the goal to trim Tripp's lead to 3-2. Michael Leeming then restored Tripp's 2 goal lead when he picked the top corner after be- ing set up by Matt Phoenix. The third period saw Whitby storm Tripp's zone and were rewarded when Steven Hiemstra scored assisted by Jason Brown. With Whitby pressing for their tie- ing goal John Sax spotted a streaking Matt Phoenix who out skated two defenders to register his fourth goal of the day and close out the scoring. With this victory Tripp pulled into a third place tie with Whitby one point behind the Lions and three back of the league leading Lumbermen. All four of these teams see action this coming Thursday night and the Lions return to the ice this Saturday. December 19 Lions 9 Scugog Lumber 2 The Port Perry Lions came out flying to take over first place in the league. From the opening face Both of Saturday's games in the novice house league on Saturday were close and exciting. The first game saw Port Perry Printing hosting Van Camps with Van Camps winning 2-0. Gavin Bayter, assisted by Ryan Williamson and Scott Sanderson and Blayne Kin- nunen assisted by Troy Martin and Jon Chambers did the scor- ing. Ryan Puckrin made many great stops picking up the shut- off the Lions dominated this game over a short-handed Scugog team. Jamie Trick opened the scoring assisted by Matthew Phillips. This was the first of six they were able to get past a very shakey Ian Johnson. Terry Jellicoe assisted by Colin Outram, then Matthew Phillips assisted by Noah Smith upped the Lions lead to 3-0. Scugog had their chances but were unable to beat the hot goaltending of Ryan Duff. Terry Jellicoe continued the onslaught with Greg Pugh and Matt McClelland getting the assists. Matt Phillips then set up Eric Vet- ter who scored his first of the year. Matt Phillips rounded out the Lions scoring of period one con- verting a great pass from Trevor Smith. Jon Jamieson finally scored for Scugog when he pick- ed up a loose puck and let go a good wrist shot that seemed to fool Ryan. The second period saw the Lions keep up the pressure but were only able to find the net once with Noah Smith scoring assisted by Terry Jellicoe. The third period saw the Lumbermen run out of gas as they only had two spare players. The Lions kept coming and were able to score two more as Philip Donnelly got both. The first assisted by Eric Vetter then Eric Vetter and Matt McClelland drawing the assists. Matt Bengal scored for Scugog assisted by Jon Jamieson and Jason Hopkins to make the final 9-2 Lions. Novice H.L. out. The second game saw 1.G.A. host ReMax with ReMax eking out a 3-2 victory. Troy Campbell and Dan Lyons scored for 1.G.A. with assists going to Scott Jef- feries, Ben Stevenson and Chris Orr. Scoring for ReMax were Shane Norton, Tom Keeble and Kevin Cochrane.
