26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, January 4, 1989 Malmont Atoms celebrate with a victory We hope everyone enjoyed a safe & happy holiday as I know the Malmont Farm Atom No. 1 team did as they skated their way to the A championship game in the Annual Bowmanville Christmas Tournament. The excitement began Dec. 27 as the Green Machine met up with the the Peterborough's Miss Diana squad. We had met this team before and it has always been a fast skating hard hitting type of: e, This game was no ferent as Port got on the board ' 1st as Craig Laird put it between the pipes assisted by Tommy Chambers. Peterborough tied it up at the end of the period giving each team a '% point. The second period remained scoreless up until 2 seconds re- maining and Peterborough scored giving them a point for the period. The Peterborough goalie kept our team off the board during this period as Port had many chances. The 3rd period was a different story. Port Perry found the win- ning combination for banging them home and the goals started flying. Kenton LeFort tied the score as he connected with a well executed pass from Billy Zaparanuik. Nice work. Next Bil- Port Legionaires Port Perry PeeWees were in the Bowmanville hockey tourna- ment, December 27th, 28th and 29th, and came away as runners- up in the "A" championship game. Game 1 was played at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday 27th, against the Oshawa Bruins, with Port Perry winning 6-1. The Legionaires came out strongly for this game, their numbers boosted by the return of Sean McEnaney, Dave Bourgeois and Joe Broadworth. Port were first on the board, six - minutes into the game, when Gavin Cochrane scored on a blast from the blue line," assisted by Jeff Card. Oshawa answered one minute later to score the equalizer, with a shot from the face off circle that beat Rick Hut- chinson. Just thirty seconds later Port Perry scored: again, and never looked back in this game. Scoring the other Port goals were Dave Pashley with two goals, one goal each to Duane Empringham, Jeff Andrews and Simon Traynor. Assists went to Jason Coutoulakis with two, one each to Simon, Jeff Andrews and Sean. Game 2 was played at 6:15 p.m. the same day, against a team from Trenton, with the Legionaires winning 4-3. This team just kept hustling the whole game, and gave the Port team a good challenge, keeping the result in doubt until the final whistle. Good hustle was shown by the line of Adam Johnston, Dave Pashley" and Jason Coutoulakis. Goals went to Jeff Andrews, Gavin; Duane and Simon, all with one each. Assists were Gavin with three, one each to Jeff Card, Jeff Andrews and Simon. Jason Kane allowed one goal, with Rick allow- ing the other two. Game 3 was played at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday the 28th, against Bowmanville, ending ina 3-3 tie. Port Perry seemed to be in total control of this game, in the early park, killing penalties with ease, and threatening to score on several rushes. The Legionaires were first on the board, when Corey Bricknell fed the puck to Jason Coutoulakis, who scored on a solo rush from his own. blue line, five minutes into the game. The next goal was scored by the buzzing line of Adam, Jason and Dave Pashley, with a pretty little tic-tac-toe play, with Dave having scoring honours. Rick Hutchinson left with a 2-0 lead, but when Jason Kane was in net the whole situation changed, with Bowmanville coming alive and scoring their three goals to spring them into the lead. Port Perry thenrallied to tie the score, once more from the line of Dave, Adam and Jason, with Dave scor- ing again. Port had to settle for the tie, however, as they were unable to score again. 'Game 4, the "A'"' Championship game, was played at 6:40 p.m. on the 29th, with Port Perry losing to Millbrook 4-2. This was a close fought game, with both teams having their chances, and the Legionaires coming up with a great display of team spirit. Millbrook scored the first goal, four minutes into the second period, to take the lead, which stood until the third period. For- ty seconds into the period Port scored, on a power play, to tie the game. Jeff Andrews passed to Sean, who passed to Duane, who scored. The game stayed tied for a hec- tic span of nine minutes, then Millbrook scored again to take the lead. Port Perry stormed back, just over a minute later to tie the game back up, igniting the fans to new vocal heights. Sean scored, assisted by Jason and Jeff Andrews. Millbrook took the lead again one minute later, then scored again less than forty seconds after that to put the game away. The last goal was amazing, as the + Millbrook player had Gavin EST. 1973 MAKERS OF: PAINITD PIN ur REPRODUCTIONS and OAK FURNITURE REMINISCENT OF YEARS GONE BY CUSTOM WORK WELCOMED: = Come in soon, browse through our showrooms; see and feel the warmth : of COUNTRY PINE : R.R. 2, UXBRIDGE - SANDY HOOK RD. yit IS, (416) 852-3617 ' 1-1/2 kati. north of corners of Brock St. & Main St. . Tues.-Sat. 9:30 - 5:30 ly took the puck himself & raced through the opposition to give Port the go ahead goal 1 minute later. Craig Laird put in his se- cond goal of the game when he combined with Jeremy Geer & Jay King late in the 3rd period to end the score 4-2. This win gave Port 3% out of 5 points. Game 2 was played late Tues- day night against the Oshawa Black Hawks. Jay Tredway was hot tonight getting 2 goals in the 1st period both assisted by Jay King & Kenton LeFort. Nice work boys! Port jumped into a 3-0 lead in the second period as Craig Laird turned on the jets and beat the close draped all over him, and still managed to get the shot away, while nearly horizontal on the ice. This seemed to dampen the spirits of the Legionaires, who failed to take advantage of a power play in the last two minutes. Rick Hutchinson played in net all game, with good defence by Lindsay Parry, Corey Bricknell and Gavin Cochrane. MVP for the team was Jeff Andrews. Pee Wee B's out Last Thursday the Stone Real- ty Pee Wees travelled to Tweed for a tournament. Port's first game was at 10:00 against God- frev. The boys looked as if they were still asleep as Godfrey easi- ly won this game 3-0. Port's second game of the day was at 12:00 against Belleville. The boys put out a much better ef- fort in this game winning 6-0. Scott Wylie scored twice for the Stone gang with single markers going to Brent Harper, Chad Gar- 'vock, Chad Kearns and Mike Sluggett. Mike Sluggett also pit- ched in with 2 assists with singles going to Chad Kearns, Brent Harper, Scott Heasman, Chad Garvock, Todd Smart and Neil Mueller. Steve Stiles picked up the shut-out. This win put Port in either the A or B final depending on the out- come of the Deseronto-Godfrey game. If Godfrey won or tied the boys would advance to the B final, but if Deseronto won by less than six we would advance to the A final. Unfortunately for us this game ended in a 3-3 tie so we hit the ice again at 2:00 against Deseronto for the B final. Scott Wylie got things started with a goal 2 minutes into the game. Todd Smart and Jeremy Norton picked ~ up the assists. Deseronto then scored twice before Jeremy Nor- ton tied it up on a nice rush with Chad Kearns picking up the assist. Unfortunately this was all of the scoring the Stohe gang was able to do this day and it proved cost- ly as Deseronto scored the winn- ing goal on a power-play with a lit- tle over 2 minutes remaining and then they added an empty net goal to make the final score 4-2. Despite the disappointing out- come the boys should be proud of their effort as they played 3 games in 5 hours with only 10 skaters. The Stone gangs next home game is Saturday, Jan. 7 at 8:45' against Stouffville. Oshawa netminder assisted by Jeremy Geer & Billy Zaparanuik. Nice line work boys! Oshawa got one goal in by the end of the 2nd period but once again the 3rd period fire was ig- nited and there was just no stop- ping Port. Tommy Chambers got his 1st of 2 goals after picking up a pass in front of the net from Kenton LeFort. Jay Tredway sewed up his hat-trick midway through the period as he out- skated the Oshawa defence mak- ing it 5-1 this time working together with wingman Jeremy Geer. Tommy Chambers got his se- cond of the night as he found the empty corner assisted by Matt Morris & Jeremy Geer. Nice team work guys! Oshawa got one more but the game ended Port on top 6-2. : The win gave Port 42 points giving them 8 out of a possible 10 points. To finish off the round robin ac- tion Port was matched up against an overly: aggressive Markham team. As both teams were tied with 8 points this was a must win to get into the A championship. Port Perry flew out onto the ice and didn't stop giving their all throughout the entire game. Ken- ton LeFort started the ball rolling early on the 1st period when he rocketted a shot past the Markham goaltender. Assisting 'on the goal was Daryl Bourgeois. Markham answered back tieing the 1st period 1-1 giving each team 2 point. Craig Laird started the second period off with a beautiful goal after picking up a pass from Jay King and racing through the Markham team. Nice work Craig. Markham tied it up 2 minutes later but Port's Billy Zaparanuik scored the go ahead goal later in the period and they never looked back from there. Jeremy Geer scored Port's 4th goal with a blistering shot from the face-off circle assisted by Tim Fitzpatrick. Jay King kicked off the 3rd period with a sizzling shot from the point beating the goalie clear. Jay Tredway raced up the boards after receiving a pass from Billy Zaparanuik and out manouvered, the goalie putting Port on top 6-2. Craig Laird picked up his second goal of the game with only 51 seconds remaining in the game from a scramble in front of the net. In spite of some of the chippiest hockey and the unbelievably poorest refereeing ever displayed on an ice surface Port Perry rais- ed above it and skated off the ice triumphant over Markham 7-2. This game put them against the home team Bowmanville for the "A' championship. This was a very exciting game of hockey with both teams show- ing a lot of hockey skills both the skaters & the goaltenders. There were a lot of end to end rushes as both Ian Shrigley and Scot Pret- chitko were put to the test many times. The boys saw a lot of ice time during this tournament with Ian McCready & Sandy Mark away for holidays the other skaters .had to make up the difference. } Port Perry opened up the scor- ing as Craig Laird picked up a pass from Jeremy Geer and blasted it at the net. Tommy Chambers was at the net to pick up the rebound and give Port a 1-0 lead. Nice work boys. Bowman- ville had the score up at the end of the 1st period. The Green Machine really ap- plied pressure in the 2nd period but were robbed at every attempt. Bowmanville shot the puck and it hit the crossbar but the referees allowed it as the go ahead goal midway through the period. That goal combined with poor of- ficiating helped to defeat Port 3-1. The team played outstanding throughout the tournament and they should all be very proud of the 110 percent effort each and every team member displayed. Super tournament boys. Billy Zaparanuik was chosen M.V.P. for the final game. Congratula- tions Bill!
