LJ 24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 10, 1989 Port Bantams win Bracebridge tourney The Port Perry Goreski Baptam #1 team sponsored by Ken & Diane Goreski of Goreski Insulation has capped off a very Suceessiy) week with 4 straight To start the 'week off, Port Perry hosted .their arch-rivals Cobourg on Wed. Jan. 4ina very . intense & exciting game. The chips were down for this game as Port Perry were winless versus Cobourg in 6 games. Port was ready and came out flying. In the first minute, Port picked up their first goal when Jeff Brett found the cage when John Ennis and Jeff Andrews set him up. This goal put Port ahead by 1 and alot more confidence was felt among the players. The rest of the period was scoreless but chippy it was for 7 penalties were handed out. Four to Port and 3 to Cobourg. The second period was a little more under control but Port went for a scoring spree when they scored 4 goals. Steve Staniland put a backhander underneath Cobourg"s goalie's pads for a 2-0 lead. Jeff Parry and Jeff Brett picked up the. assists. Four minutes later, Port's Jeff An- drews netted a great goal when he received passes from Jeff Brett - and John Ennis for a 3-0 lead. However, Cobourg retalliated with a goal to narrow the gap to 3-1 for Port Perry. Port Perry was not about to lay back and play defense. They hit hard and passed the puck well and it payed off when Steve Staniland netted his 2nd goal of the night with a slap shot from the point. Gavin Cochrane and Jeff Andrews picked up the assists and Port went up 4-1. Cobourg then tried to mount a comeback and scored another goal for a 4-2 score. Port Perry saw that their win was in sight and poured on the pressure which resulted in a goal by John Ennis on his knees in the slot area. Jeff Brett did the digg- ing in the corner for the assist and Brett Puckrin drew the second assist, | Cobourg used their great abili- ty to move the puck and showed they never quit and scored 2 goals: to scare Port Perry, but the final |, score ended in a 5-4 score. Ray Doyle handled the duties between the pipes for Port Perry and played a spectacular game. A word of thanks goes to the Peewee #1 team from Port Perry who loaned four players due to the Bantam's injuries and suspen- sions. The Peewees handled themselves well on the ice and picked up a few points as well. - Tournament The Port squad was on a highnote and had a great attitude to go into a tournament. Port Perry travelled to Bracebridge for a 2 day tournament. Port Perry's first game was against a team from Trenton with a multitude of size and some quick passing. Port Perry kind of felt their was around the ice for the 1st period and both teams picked up a few penalties. The scoring of the game all took place within 2 minutes in the second period. Port Perry got their first goal on the powerplay when Jason Towns knocked the puck in off the post, Jeff Parry and Steve taniland picked up the assists. This gabe Port the lead 1-0. Port Perry scored another of the powerplay when Jon Heyes tipped in Brett Puckrin's short from the point to up the lead to 2-0. Jeff Brett picked up the other assist. ' The final score was 2-0 for Port Perry. The goaltending duties were handled by Shawn Larocque who deserved his shutout. He played a very strong game and showed some great saving ability. Port Perry's second game was a do or die situation. Port Perry met u with a large and powerful Brad- ford Sduad. Both teams played a very slow game with only a few hits. Port Perry handled the scor- ing duties in the 1st period when Steve Laird scored on a one-timer on the powerplay. Jason Cochrane and Chris McLeod pick- ed up the assist. This put Port up 1-0 The second period was full of penalties for Bradford but Port couldn't capitalize and went into the third period with a 1-0 lead. Port Perry thought they better chalk up another goal so Jason Towns made an end to end rush and scored to put Port up 2-0. Goaltender Ray Doyle also drew an assist on the goal. Bradford tried to mount a comeback when they scored with 3 minutes to go to narrow the gap to 2-1. Port Perry however scored an empty net goal and took the game 3-1 and a berth on the championship. Doyle handled the goaltending and played a tremendous game. In the championship game, Port Perry met up with the hometown team, Bracebridge. The Bracebridge squad is a tough hard-hitting team who can shoot and skate very well. Port Perry knew what they were up against, but were still a bit surprised when the game started. Both teams come out hit- ting hard but Bracebridge found the net first and took the lead 1-0. In the 2nd period the game started to wave in favour of Bracebridge but Port Perry hushed the crowd when they scored on the powerplay. Brett Puckrin hit the net when in the slot area and tied the game a 1 a piece. Jan Heyes and Jason Cochrane picked up the assists. The game was a tie going into the 3rd period but Jody Logan put the eventual game winner in the net. The final score was 3-1 for Port Perry and Port picked up the championship of an 8 team tourney. Shawn Larocque goaltended for Port Perry and played his usual of 'poise and skillfullness. The Port Perry squad played a pretty good tournament and they could play like a team. It was a great team effort which coach Todd Wilbur and the rest of the coaching staff bere proud of. Port Perry's next home game is Wed. January 11 Bowmanville. versus Novice H.L. Last Wednesday there were 2 games in the Novice H.L. The First game saw Van Camps defeat IGA 5-1. Brad Johnston led the way for Van Camps with 2 goals and 1 assist. Blayne Kin- nanen scored once and picked up 2 assists. Scott Sanderson and Jon Chambers also scored with Troy Martin and Ryan Puckrin picking up assists. Jeremy Heyworth replied for IGA assisted by Barry McIntyre. In. the second game Re/Max defeated Davids 3-1. Jeremy Gibson scored twice for Re/Max with Shane Norton scoring once. Tom Keeble, Anson Crosier, Jeremy Gibson and Shane Norton all picked up one assist. Jay Flet- cher scored for David's with Marc Versage picking up an assist. The first game on Saturday saw Port Perry Printing defeat IGA 4-0. Arron Levy scored once and picked up an assist for Printing while Jamie Strickert, Paul Shrigley and Jonathon Reed also scored. Corey Branton picked up the shutout. The second game saw Van Camp play Re/Max in a very ex- citing game which was eventual: ly won by Re/Max 4-3. Shane Nor- ton scored twice for Re/Max with single markers going to Kevin Cochrane and Alex Dell. Nick Kutlik picked up 3 assists with Kevin Cochrane and Jeremy Gib- son each picking up 1 assist. Replying for Van Camps were Aaron Chambers' who scored twice and Brad Johnston. Blayne Kinnunen, Ryan Puckrin and Gavin Baxter all picked up one assist. Thieves hit fishing hut A fish hut on Lake Scugog, "near Goreski's resort, was broken into sometime between December 20 and 27. Durham Regional Police say JR. 'C" HOCKEY thieves smashed a window in the hut and stole an ice auger, a heater and assorted fishing lures, valued at approximately $600. The crime was reported January 7.
