He suggested to council that when he receives official word from the MTC, a meeting should . be set up immediately to go and fight for more money. In a preliminary report, Mr. MacDonald said that he had re- ceived word that Scugog will be receiving $1,635,000 in 1989, a mere $57,000 increase over 1988. "This represents a 4% increase for construction and no increase for maintenance", Mr. MacDonald told council. Mayor Hall, who was a mem- ber of the council that passed that old by-law, said last week it was designed to give local residents the chance to drive their snowmobiles from their homes to Lake Scugog or the trail systems in the rual are- as of the Township. However, he noted, that peo- ple driving on sidewalks or at ex- cessive rates of speed are abusing the provisions of the by-law, and if public safety is jeopardized, the council is prepared to take tougher steps. Snowmobiles are banned on all private property unless the op- erator has the permission of the - owner. Mayor Hall said he has been in contact with Durham Region Police and asked that officers watch for snowmobilers using the sidewalks, especially if young children are using the sidewalks. >>> >>> >> >>> > > wa AAA wn AAANAANAAM ~ ~ AAAAAAANAAAMAMAMAMAAAN AAAAAAMAAA AAAAAAAAA AAAAMAAAAN AA AANA AA AAAN He said that some of the peo- ple complaining are upset because they can't identify snowmobilers or the registration number. And if people contact police, the offender is long-gone by the time a patrol car is dispatched to the scene. Mayor Hall said he appreciates that most snowmobile operators are consciencious and safety- minded when driving their ma- chines in the village. The problems are being creat- ed by a small minority. The Port Perry by-law carries provision for fines up to $300 for anyone convicted of an offense in- volving the illegal operation of a snowmobile in the municipality. We're not sure, ei- Statistics Canada reports that in 1986, Scugog Township's pop- ulation was 15,229. The Provincial Ministry of Revenue says the 0 ulation as of Scu ther June 1988 was 15,675. Somehow, these figures don't quite jibe. In the two year period from 86 to 88, did the population only go 'up by about 400 people. Heck, there we thet many new houses built i Scugog in that Soro e thing that both Stats Can and the Revenue Department agree on when it comes to Scugog's population is the rate of growth. The Township is growing at an annual rate of 2.5 per cent over the past few years. And what is the fastest grow- ing community in Durham Re- gion the past three years? Ajax by far, with a growth rate of 11 per cent. Cd Durham's population in June 1988, according to the Revenue Ministry was 348,141. That's 100,000 more people than lived in Durham 12 years ago.
