8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 10, 1989 SERVICE WITH A SMILE Only in Port Perry you say? Well, maybe not only in Port Perry, but quite likely only in a small community. What | am making reference to, is getting people to pull to gether to make something happen that under normal circumstances just wouldn't be done. Last Tuesday afternoon, | received a phone call from a very good friend asking me if | would consider being a pallbearer at the fu- neral of his father. Naturally, | was honoured that he had asked, and accepted. When | got home from work that evening, about 8:30 p.m.; | went up to the bedroom and pulléd out my good, blue suit. It was the suit | had purchased about four years ago, when my father passed away, and since then has proba- bly only be worn about a dozen times. The cleaners tags were still on the suit as | pulled it from the closet, and proceeded to try iton. Just as | suspected, the suit had shrunk! Having pulled on the trousers, zipped up the fly and buttoned the top, it was all | could do to stand up straight. There was so much hanging over the belt, | knew | couldn't chance spend- ing a whole day in these duds, so | removed them and searched through the closet for something else. There was just nothing that would do for the occassion, so | decided to see if | could get a suit first thing the next morning. At 9:30 a.m. when Selections Men's Wear opened their doors, | walked in and told Pam, | was desperate. "| need a suit, and | need it ready in two hours," | told her. | could tell by the look on Pam's face that "she thought | was joking, but as | blurted out my reasons for the rush, she quickly came to my aid. We tried on a couple of different suits, and quickly (remember, time was of the es- sence) made a decision on a dark blue, striped suit. After about five calls to her regular seam- stress to make the necessary alterations (the line was busy each time), | suggested we try Jackie at Port Cleaners. Pam gave Jackie a call, and she said she could probably handle hemming the pants, but the the sleeves on the suit jacket would just take too long. | quickly decided if we could get the pants done, I'd buy the suit and go with Jottings by J. Peter Hvidsten long sleeves on the suit jacket. When Nancy rushed the suit down to Port Cleaners, Jackie took the suit and said she would do the best she could. At 11:45 a.m., about two hours after | en- tered Selections, | was back at Port Cleaners to pick up my suit. Not only were the pant legs shortened, but Jackie had pulled out all the stops and shortened the arms on my suit jack- et as well. By noon | was on my way to Toronto, all decked out in a brand new suit that fit like a glove. How's that for service? As | said at the beginning of this column, the kind of service | got last week from our local merchants was "second to none," and | would just like to say thanks to Pam and Jackie for helping my out in my time of need. WHERE ARE THE SEATBELTS? Over the Christmas/New Years holiday on a number of occassions, | witnessed parents driving their kids around without seat belts. At one time this may not have bothered me too much, but since Nancy told me she had gone through the windshield of a car as a young teen (her face requiring over 100 stitch- es) | am much more aware of the importance of seatbelts. Just before Christmas | followed a car in which a youngster (probably about six year old) was standing on the front seat of the car be- side her father. | couldn't help but think that she would become a "human projectile" if he ever had to slam on the brakes, and she would probably be killed or severly cut and injured going through the windshield. Another day, | was witness to a mother and father in the front seat with three kids jumping around in the back of the car. Once again, can you imagine what would happen to them if the vehicle had to make a sudden stop, or was hit by another car? It doesn't take a lot of sense to realize a child's life is in jeopardy if they are not securely strapped into their seat with safety belts. In one split second, a young, happy child can be- come a lifeless body on the side of the road. Another statistic for the books. | urge anyone who doesn't strap their kids into seat belts to start NOW and prevent a trad- gey before it happens. Remember When?
